Would it be possible to have a bunch of computers running, and whenever a lot of CPU load is needed on one of them, it spreads the load over all the computers?

Heeeey, nice I'm going to look into that!
But what about just for general tasks?

Not in the way I think your looking. It can be done with a cluster. Google & Wikipedia will help you out there. People tend to mainly use distcc or build render farms for rendering 3d for example. But using spare cpus across the LAN for say playing Quake 23(TM) isn't going to happen.
SIDENOTE: Distributed Multihead X (http://dmx.sourceforge.net/) maybe fun! & http://digg.com/gaming/Quake_3_on_24_mo … ux_servers
Don't say I don't deliever!

I still don't see how this can be practical for real-time usage (eg, gaming) as opposed to batch-jobs (eg, rendering to a file). Your network latency is likely to be so much higher than the process just waiting for the CPU to become available.
If you get this up and running, I'd love to hear the outcome
