Basic CMS with decent upgrade path

I am maintaining this website for a not-for-profit organisation (www.snjv.be) and currently it is running Drupal. However, upgrading can be a real hassle between major versions (I tried backing up the MySQL database from a Drupal 5 installation and re-importing it into a Drupal 6 install but no dice).

So I'm looking for a nice but not too complex CMS that provides decent upgrade paths. I'm no PHP or MySQL wizard, but I can get around with a bit of hacking (mainly PHP snippets).

If you need to know anything else, just ask.

Re: Basic CMS with decent upgrade path

I'd agree that WordPress is a very good solution. Active development, customizable - or not, depending on your needs - and yes, upgrading is ridiculously easy...

Re: Basic CMS with decent upgrade path

I switched from Drupal to Wordpress for simplification but you have already said WP is a no go

Joomla is the other well known alternative to Drupal...maybe this will be less troublesome when upgrading? http://www.joomla.org/

Do you have a preference on language? Does it have to be PHP based? If you are a python savvy then there may be some content out there to jump start with cool frameworks such as Django?

In about a week or so I am completing my current contract and then plan on starting to look at Django in depth so if I find something to ease the way with it I'll post details here if you think it would help...I'm having a geeky month swatting up on tech I haven't learnt at work before starting on a new job smile

Re: Basic CMS with decent upgrade path

I have no particular preference, but i18n support is quite a pre actually (now the Drupal site can switch languages if the user asks so).

Re: Basic CMS with decent upgrade path

Never really used it myself (just gave it a quick try), but check out Jaws. Dunno if it fits your needs though..

"Jaws is a Framework and Content Management System for building dynamic web sites. It aims to be User Friendly giving ease of use and lots of ways to customize web sites, but at the same time is Developer Friendly, it offers a simple and powerful framework to hack your own modules."

Edit: Well, it don't seem to be in active development anymore.. last update January 2009..
Edit2: Well, went to their forums and I read they gonna release a new version very soon..

When I started setting stuff up, it had a bad reputation when it came to security. I don't know how that is now, but it's been in the news a few months ago - with a major security issue. So I'm not really comfortable with it.

I am definitely not an expert at this.  I was looking for something I could get my arms around and choose Django.  I choose it, in part, because I was trying to learn Python at that time.  I found the Django solution to be eloquent and only took me the better part of a weekend to put together a simple, themed, content managed web site.

That's a fair enough point and completely true even now.  There is of course things like http://www.seoegghead.com/software/word … rewall.seo now but I won't try and convince you otherwise if you have a dislike of it!
