Unable to register unless running linux

Hi,

I just tried to register, and the question needed to register makes you have to run linux.

This is not very friendly.

I ran the command under cygwin, and the answer didn't work. I can't run linux at work.

Please make the registration question open to those who want to register, but don't have the expertise to decide a dense piece of scripting.

Even a liveCD? How about at home?

Shouldn't you be working at work and not playing around on the forums?  wink

As well as encouraging registration by competent Linux users, the question has virtually eliminated the volumes of spam that we previously had to deal with manually - so it serves two useful purposes...

Its not intended to be.

The intention is to ensure that those registering have the 'expertise' to run a simple linux command. Without that 'expertise' they really shouldn't be using Arch in the first place, there's many good distros for first-time users who want it all done for them. You did manage to register though, so I'm not sure what the problem is?

Smells like Qemu to me. But fancy nonetheless.

Either way, the requirement to run Linux when you register was not a decision made overnight. You can rant, but that won't change it. Even the biggest noob can find and burn himself an Ubuntu Live CD nowadays. Or an online emulator, apparently tongue.

I see what you did there! Didn't even know such things existed....

Have the records show I did not mean to imply Karol was a noob. Much to the contrary.

We ought to show this when they get it wrong. Maybe give them like three tries and then block them for an hour.

I can't exactly put my finger on why, but that sounds like a great idea for registrations on holidays (when most people have free time anyway).

Or the first week of January, when people decide their New Year's resolution is to try Arch.

Is this a recent change?  I haven't used anything but linux or unix systems in years.  What's the actual requirement for registering?

I don't recall exactly (and am too lazy to search) but it's about a year old.
Log out and click the 'Register' link to see what riddle you have to answer.

Edit: Found it!

Yes, even better!

@Ngoonie, you're right. You shall pass!

And futhermore, if my three strikes and you're out approach is adopted, I propose to add degrading messages in between attempts.

I imagine the average registration attempt to go something like this:

Question: What is the output of blah, blah, blah?
Prospective registrant: uname wut? WTF
Answer:
Prospective registrant: Damn, I accidentally hit the enter button.
Message: Strike one, dumb ass!

Question:What is...
Registrant: I hope I don't have to use that terminal thingy. I never did figure out what that was for. Oh well, I guess I'll try it because I really want to be an Archer! I love the simplicity. Arch is for me! OK, lets see,
#What is the output of ....?
#bash: What: command not found
Answer:bash: What: command not found
Message: Strike two. Wrong again dumb ass!

Answer:
Registrant: Dammit!, I hit the f*&^%$g enter button again!
Massage: Strike three. You're outta here. You are hereby banned for life! Go. Leave. Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya. Good luck to you and may God have mercy on your soul.

Registrant then gets redirected to the Ubuntu homepage

edit: This thread is then redirected to TGN
