ATI no sound over HDMI with open source driver.

I am trying to get sound to work over HDMI.

I have read
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#HDMI_Audio
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=124130

I added the 'radeon.audio=1' after the kernel line.

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

aplay -D plughw:0,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

and

aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

gives no errors but produces no sound.

cat /proc/asound/modules
 0 snd_hda_intel
 1 snd_hda_intel
lspci |grep ATI
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Caicos [AMD RADEON HD 6450]
01:00.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc Caicos HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6400 Series]

I have reset the receiver also.

I normally had to use catalyst to get audio but I read that the open source driver supported it now. Not sure what is wrong help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Nope, it's not yet supported in the open driver. Kernel 3.3 has HDMI support for Evergreen (HD5xxx) cards, but you have a Northern Islands (HD6xxx) card.

So my only option is catalyst. I know it's not supported but is there a reliable one to install to get audio?
