Hello everyone,
I'm reading a lot of different information on how to setup a mail server and I just want to be sure I'm choosing the right component here.
What I want to do is to use my our home server to to get mail from my shared hosting (hawkhost) and to serve them from my home using roundcube.
I don't need any smtp server; I will use the smtp provided by my hosting. I already have a dynamic DNS for my home server.
I know I can use roundcube with a remote imap server but I want to store my email on my own server.
Is getmail + dovecot + roundcube ok for that ?
Do I need to setup postfix ?
Thanks for your help.

I'm no mailserver-guru, but I think your choice of packages is correct. You don't need postfix, unless you want to setup your own smtp-server.
I don't know if roundcube needs an IMAP-server, but if it supports reading plain maildirs, it just might suffice to configure getmail to store all mail in maildirs and make roundcube read those dirs. If it doesn't, you'll need an IMAP-server like dovecot to expose your maildirs through IMAP.
Also, if Hawkhost supports IMAP, take a look at offlineimap to replace getmail. I looked at switching from fetchmail to offlineimap a while ago and it has a definite pro in that it supports IMAP IDLE and thus it downloads e-mail the second it arrives at Hawkhost. I never got around to make the switch though...

IME, you'll make life simpler if you install postfix and just set it up to use your ISP mail server as a smarthost. IIRC most webmail packages expect to be able to find an MTA on the local machine.

I'm playing with dovecot and getmail right now and it look like ok. I'll add roundcube tomorrow.
I'll probably start by setting hawkhost smtp server in roundcube and see later if I need to install postfix.

This is of interest to me since I just had the same idea recently, though I'm mainly planning to access it via offlineimap. I hadn't really thought about webmail. Please report back if you ended up requiring postfix...

No need to install postfix. getmail + dovecot is ok.
I'm also using procmail and roundcube and I now have a really nice setup.
Follow this for dovecot : http://wiki2.dovecot.org/HowTo/SimpleVirtualInstall
