Seems Gentoo are not happy with how udev is moving and are forking it [1] with the dev tree here [2]

forking udev seems to be quite popular lately...but I'm afraid it doesn't quite relate to arch in any way

(Also friendly warning to future posters: if your rant about systemd/Gentoo/Arch/udev/futures thereof has a) already been made many times or b) belongs more on a blog than trying to beat forumgoers to death with a wall-of-text, save it - it'd be nice to keep this thread out of TGN.)

This comes from official Gentoo developers, not "some guy".

You'll have to clarify yourself here, because I've intentionally not added hard dependencies whenever possible. The last hard dependency I added to systemd was 2½ months ago when I added libgcrypt for forward secure sealing in the journal.

My mistake; not sure how I misread that. Cron hasn't been replaced -- timer units aren't even close to functionally equivalent. logind replaces the no-longer-developed consolekit, and is a superior replacement (notice that logind doesn't spawn off a thread for watching every tty). The acpid "replacement" makes sense, since it's always been about firing system-wide events from a specific user. systemd is about providing a useful platform to build from. I wouldn't be too concerned about it invoking Zawinski's Law any time soon. It provides functionality where it makes sense. Many of the more "exotic" features are entirely optional -- and this even includes logind if you want to trim down your build that much.

Anyways, this is offtopic. The gentoo segment behind this new fork has some questionable experience with the code they're taking on (many commits made imply that they have no idea what they're doing), and they seem to have intransigent and non-sensical motives. Their energy would have been better off pointed at working peaceably with systemd/udev upstream (which they've not done before), rather than turning Gentoo into the laughing stock of a corner of the internet for a week. systemd 196 already offers the ability to build udev without kmod and blkid as dependencies -- something they keep harping on, and could have simply written the patches for.
