[SOLVED] TP-LINK wireless adapter TL-WN725N - should buy?

Hi!

I have a notebook which has a Broadcom BCM4313 wireless adapter and it is a pain in the ... (even on Windows). Changing the wireless adapter in the notebook isn't as easy as I thought (Lenovo blocks both my netbook's and my friend's laptop's wifi), so I'd like to buy a USB wireless adapter.

Because I don't want to spend money on another not-working thing, I'd like to ask Your opinion on the matter.

The adapter I'm targeting is this. (Not the router on the picture on the top, just the adapter.)

Can I use it out-of-the-box or do I still need a cable to struggle with getting it to work?

It uses a Realtek chipset, the kernel rtl8192cu driver has support for it, so it should work out-of-the-box.

I own and use a TP-Link TL-WN821N v3 which uses the ath9k driver and everything works fine, except occasionally it will overheat and stop sending packets. I fixed it by reducing the transmit power (iwconfig wlan0 txpower 12) and now it doesn't overheat anymore. Since I didn't need the range reducing the transmit power works fine.

Hi,

I just got a TL-WN725N. It is true that you have a kernel driver but in my case I couldn't make it work. When plug it in, the kernel detected and loaded the module rtl8192cu, but when trying to scan the available networks, it show only a couple (and sometimes none) of the available ones. I tried to connect to a WEP based AP without success.

I had to download and use the drivers provided by Realtek.

 Linux 3.6.9-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 4 08:04:10 CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

After installing the driver 3.4.4_4749 from 2012/11/12, I was able to discover my AP and connect to it (WPA2).

Update: In the driver (.tar.gz file) you have an install.sh that helps you to build and install the driver. It works without errors when you don't have the rtl8192cu (and related) modules loaded.

Hi guys, as you can see here I had a big trouble with my Mediatek 7630 device.

I decided to buy ad usb adapter, so if you tried this and it works with archlinux, that's a big deal.

My Asus X551MA has the "Realtek 8821AE Wireless LAN 802.11ac PCI-E NIC" card, which isn't supported yet it seems, and I didn't get it working at all.

So I went out and bought the "TP-LINK TL-WN725N". I plugged it in and it instantly found my wireless network, but when I try to connect it just says "Requesting a Wi-Fi network address..." for like 15 seconds and then it disconnects.

Did it just work instantly for you Dexxt?
I thought it might be a conflict between the two cards, but since there is no driver loaded for my OEM card I don't understand how.

Anyone got any ideas?

PS: This is my first post on the forums. Hope this isn't highjacking the thread.

Without providing more information it's not possible to help you with your TP-Linik device (hint: connect manually with wpa_supplicant on the command-line and use the -d switch, then look at the output; basically read the troubleshooting section at the wireless wiki page), I'd just like to say that kernel 3.14, which should be released this weekend, will have a driver for the 8821AE.

Thanks for the response. Excited to hear that my OEM card might be supported soon! Providing more information is hard as I don't really know what's relevant, and supplying different output is hard (I have to copy it from a usb-stick) as the computer in question doesn't have internet yet.. I guess I could mention that I installed ArchBang and that my issues are occuring in OpenBox, which uses NetworkManager. I can't really follow the wiki for Wireless network either as I don't have the neccessary packages.

We don't support ArchBang here, see forum guidelines. Those guidelines are there for a good reason, I can't know what ArchBang does or doesn't do in its default config. I also can't know what NetworkManager is or isn't doing, though this one would be the same on Arch. Only directly seeing wpa_supplicant debug output can tell me what's going on. The wpa_supplicant wiki page explains how to use it manually, you need to do that and add the -d switch as I said.

Edit: I said in my first reply that the rtl8192cu driver should handle this device, but you're using the r8188eu driver. So I checked, there is indeed a new revision of the device available which uses a different chipset than the first. So my claim that it should work fine may not apply anymore . If I google for the "R8188EU: ERROR indicate disassoc" error, I see people having similar problems than you. However, this error message is too vague to know where exactly the issue is. Still, google is your friend, you might find some useful info.

@Dexxt: Which driver does your device use, rtl8192cu or r8188eu?
