Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

After today's update of the Linux kernel to 3.10, I can not start X using the proprietary nvidia driver on my IdeaPad Y500 laptop (MBG2BMH with GeForce GT650M GPU).

When I try to do this, it takes a second or two in the "loading GLX" state, after which the screen goes black. My fan goes to max and after a few seconds, the system dies.
X logs don't show much:

[ 49.888] (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling 2D acceleration
[ 56.164] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA GPU at PCI:1:0:0. Please

[ 56.164] (II) UnloadSubModule: "fb"
[ 56.164] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I will add a kernel log after rebooting, because I seem to have lost it.
I think the relevant message read "GPU fell off the bus", which I think indicates a crash of the GPU driver.

After rolling back to 3.9.9, the issue is gone.

My xorg.conf (and xorg.conf.d) does not contain anything special (only a DPI fix). I tried removing it, but the issue is still there.

EDIT: I seem to be unable to get a kernel log for these sessions.
Journalctl simply does not show the failing session.
I don't know why I did get a log before. It happened on a linux-ck build with a couple of modifications, a while back (and the logs seem to be gone).
I'll try again later, making sure I sync.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

I am also having the same issue and experiencing the same symptoms.

Thinkpad W530, Nvidia Quadro K1000M - Discrete graphics mode

I also need to boot with the noapic flag. I don't know if this makes a difference or not.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Having the exact same issue here on my Asus G75VX, Nvidia geforce GTX 670 MX. When I want to start x, it gets to the point where the dekstop would normally start (Loading extension GLX) and then my computer just shuts off.

Downgrading packages fixes the issue for me.

I started a topic on this in the pacman section, but nonody has commented yet. I wonder if this is an issue only on laptops.

I have the same issue on a Lenovo y500 as well. So far I have just downgraded the kernel and driver to fix the issue.

Same problem here. Lenovo IdeaPad Y580, Nvidia GTX 660M. Bumblebee stopped working after the kernel update.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

As of yet, the proprietary Nvidia driver does not support kernel 3.10 and a certain patch has to be applied in order to compile it. This patch has a side effect of breaking Bumblebee and potentially some boot configurations.

Should you need to use Bumblebee right now - rollback to an earlier kernel is the way to go. Otherwise you'd have to wait until Nvidia fixes the driver and/or Bumblebee developers introduce a workaround.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

It's generally preferred to use Nouveau over the proprietary drivers.
Try un-installing nvidia by doing

pacman -Rsnc nvidia nvidia-utils

And removing your X configurations. If you don't, X will look for the old driver, and when it can't find that module, it will crash.
Then start X. See if it works.

If nouveau does not work, simply re-install nvidia and

pacman -Rsnc nouveau

I use the Rsnc switches instead of just -R because it pretty much removes all traces of that package and everything that depends on it. It's a nice combo especially when you're troubleshooting.

also, Lenovo Ideapad Y580, Nvidia 660M and after the kernel update bumblebee doesn't work... But i need new kernel because of the alx-module... although I don't need bumblebee right now, so I can wait for a fix/workaround...

Topic on NVidia forums

Also, I feel like these are two separate issues, unless the Bumblebee issue also causes the system crash...

The new nvidia driver and kernel from testing didn't resolve the issue for me on the Y500. I guess I get to wait longer.

Same issue here on my y500. Just downgrade to the last kernel and nvidia modules and got the X working again.
Didn't try any other drivers.

Anyone knows how is the SLI support on this new kernel?
Thanks.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

This seems to affect all Optimus-capable motherboards, even if Optimus is off. Does anyone have a contradictory data point? Are there Optimus motherboards out there that are NOT experiencing this? It doesn't affect my desktop system, which does not have Optimus (obviously).

I have a fairly recent non-Optimus nvidia laptop that I will try to install 3.10 on, and see if it hits the same issue.

I do not have Optimus and I have the problem. I have a single dedicated video card (NVIDIA GeForce 750M).

The problem remains with the new nvidia 319.32-6 (testing) and the 3.10 kernel here.

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

So this is odd...

There is a brand new driver on NVIDIA's website 319.31-15 so I decided to download it and install it. X still wouldn't load so I tried to go back to nouveau. I couldn't get that either. Here is the odd part...When I boot up the computer, X will not load with just nvidia loaded...however, if I modprobe nouveau it loads. It's like I am using two drivers. The NVIDIA screen comes up and the driver settings are there with this latest build. I don't know what to make of it.

I have just updated and it does not work for me on the Lenovo Y500 with the 650M.

This is getting really annoying. I have to manually downgrade quite a few packages every time I test...

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad Y500, Linux 3.10, NVidia driver crashes

Same Here, Acer Aspire Timeline M5
