USB Wireless card with external antenna

I just moved into a new apartment and the only option for internet is wireless, but I can't connect to the access point because the signal is poor on my laptop. Would getting a usb wireless card with an external antenna help?

I guess that depends on what you are using currently.

Re: USB Wireless card with external antenna

Yes, there are no guarantees but a good USB wireless card (like Cisco) can have a profound impact...

You didn't say if the router was in your house or whether you can get repeaters or even another router to act as a bridge.
However, there are no guarantees; keep your receipts. The short answer is: it can.

rufus: please make more of an effort with how you post. You have now reached 100 posts, try and make the next 100 look less like texts sent by a drunken sailor.

I am just trying to show support. I think Mr Wonderwoofy is petty and apparently you are too goodbye and get a life!

Re: USB Wireless card with external antenna

I am using an intel 6205 in an thinkpad t530. The router is not in my apartment its in a hallway. The landlord said its 15 euro a month to connect. There is another option that is available through a cell carrier but it costs 15 euro for 5 days, thats around 90 euro/month. There is no wired internet either.

Thank-you rufus, you can have a week away from the boards to reconsider the manner in which you contribute to our community.

Re: USB Wireless card with external antenna

Is there anywhere in your apartment that you can get a decent signal?  I'm thinking that if you have some small area that can get a decent signal, then you could get a wireless repeater to give yourself some better signal.

Re: USB Wireless card with external antenna

I have had a positive experience with Alpha USB antennae, touted to be large gain antennas. I am especially fond of the 036 family, (036NHR, 036NH,..). I am using one right now on my Raspberry -turned-router. The antenna with chip 148F:3070 (Ralink 2870/3070) works out of the box on Linux systems thanks to the rt2800usb driver. In any case, when in doubt, check WikiDevi. Cheers.
