Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Please, refer to AMD Catalyst page on ArchWiki. You forgot to disable KMS. You forgot to blacklist FOSS driver's kernel module. You forgot a fistful of things.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

there is no file under /etc/modprobe.d/

and there is one file under this dir /etc/modules-load.d/  catalyst.conf   and one line  just fglrx

and here is line of grub  as you see i did all

menuentry 'Arch Linux, with Linux core repo kernel' --class arch --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-core repo kernel-true-1a596825-4426-4e54-ba76-3cd4638f7a91' {
	load_video
	set gfxpayload=keep
	insmod gzio
	insmod part_msdos
	insmod ext2
	set root='hd0,msdos6'
	if [ x$feature_platform_search_hint = xy ]; then
	  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root --hint-bios=hd0,msdos6 --hint-efi=hd0,msdos6 --hint-baremetal=ahci0,msdos6 1a596825-4426-4e54-ba76-3cd4638f7a91
	else
	  search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set=root 1a596825-4426-4e54-ba76-3cd4638f7a91
	fi
echo	'Loading Linux core repo kernel ...'
	linux	/boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=1a596825-4426-4e54-ba76-3cd4638f7a91 rw
  nomodeset
	echo	'Loading initial ramdisk ...'
	initrd	/boot/initramfs-linux.img
}

i forgot to install lib32-catalyst-utils smile now installed and reconfigured xorx  it works  but screen brightness i too  low  and FN+brightness  do nothing:(

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Some people reported about brightness issues on beta catalysts. Since I use desktop GPU, there's no need for it as for me. Search in AUR for stable laptop drivers - I bet I've seen them.

I have an experience - but, unfortunately, fruitless at the same time. Muxless PX A+I platform. Is there a way to use new catalyst, not 11.8 one?

Muxless Intel/AMD, you can use Bumblebee, though it doesn't work quite as well as Nvidia (mostly because Primus is spotty at best, and VGL isn't as good as Primus): https://github.com/YoRyan/bumblebee-amd-hacks

There is a thread on Github about getting Primus to work with the AMD branch of Bumblebee, but there hasn't been any update on it in several months: https://github.com/amonakov/primus/issues/104

Otherwise, keep in mind that the Catalyst drivers *do* give you the option to run exclusively on the AMD card. I've had success with this in running native games (Dota2 runs great this way, for instance) but dual monitors don't work so well with this setup (lots of artifacts and other strangeness).

That said, keep in mind that the latest Xorg server and FOSS AMD drives *do* feature native offloading, and it works relatively well (though for me, using RadeonSI, I run into issues with the radeonsi driver not being so great yet).

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Anyone running a 290X?  I just got mine in today, however I haven't tried the latest beta that supports it supposedly:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n … px=MTQ5NTk

Vi0l0, any chance you could add that to your repo?  Thanks!  Also, I'll be sure to share any details if I get it working.  I have a 3 portrait monitor eyefinity setup so it should be fun....and by that I mean painful.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I am also getting the error that bountykiller and fiendfan1 had. I am using the catalyst-test package. Building from the AUR as i had been doing recently just gets the same compile errors as they do.

The [catalyst] package does build but i get a host of bugs with it ranging from a black second screen that can't be perswaded to show a desktop from not booting and getting rainbow colours on both screens.

Interestingly according to my logs the module had been failing to build previously since my kernel updated on the 17th but its only become an issue for me today.

I'd like to use discrete-only, but that "Insyde BIOS" shit is unusable - only minimal configuration available, so I'm stuck with unusable notebook. Well, I use it rarely, if not "once in a lifetime", so there's nothing to do here anymore.

Discrete-only, on a muxless system, doesn't have anything to do with the BIOS -- MUXless systems, by their nature, do not allow for enabling discrete-only via the BIOS.

Discrete-only is achieved, if you use Vi0l0's pxp drivers, by using the pxp_switch_catalyst (or whatever the script is called) and switching to AMD. So you boot your machine, run the pxp switch script, and then restart X (killall X, or if you're running a login manager, logout and log back in). Once you've done that, you *should* be using the discrete GPU, barring any other sort of failure.

bountykiller wrote:

After some search, I discovered that the file libfglrx_ip.a get extracted into the folder catalyst-test\src\archive_files\arch\x86_64\lib\modules\fglrx\build_mod when building the package, but it doesn't seems to be present in the package file.

Can someone help me to go further?
Does someone know how this is intented to work?

in the first step makepkg is moving libfglrx_ip.a to the pkg dir, here's PKGBUILD line:

      install -m644 arch/${_archdir}/lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/libfglrx_ip.a \
                ${pkgdir}/usr/share/ati/build_mod

then pacman is extracting it from the package to the file system. Now catalyst_build_module is able to use it by copying it to the tmp dir, here are atalyst_build_module lines:

    workdir=$(mktemp -du /tmp/catalyst.XXXXXX)
    cp "/usr/share/ati/build_mod" "${workdir}" -R

I had no problems with catalyst-test package, so I assume the problem is on your side.
I would start with making sure that there's no space in the directory name in which you are trying to build the package (makepkg doesn't like space character)

Vi0l0, any chance you could add that to your repo?  Thanks!  Also, I'll be sure to share any details if I get it working.  I have a 3 portrait monitor eyefinity setup so it should be fun....and by that I mean painful.

Thanks for the info,
13.11 beta 6 feels much better than previous betas.
catalyst-test and catalyst-test-pxp @ AUR were updated, same as [catalyst] repo.
For the first time I'm thinking about moving this beta release to the stable repo tongue - but it's too early, need to test it better.

changes:
- support for R9 290(X)
- fixed so called 30 FPS / Tear-Free / V-Sync bug  - finally!
- a new huge (~40MB) library is inside /usr/lib/hsa and is called libamdocl
- amdcccle supports more languages, new ones are: cs, da, hu, ja, ko

BTW How 290x feels? I was also thinking about buying this monster but the heat that it generates makes me waiting for non-reference model. Is it really that bad? Are you gonna fight the heat with some custom air cooling or WC?

Hi all,

after upgrading my whole system, i did reboot my computer, then had to reinstall the catalyst-test package because my kernel was upgraded. So far, so good, except that it give me an error saying that the fglrx module failed to build.

Did someone already had this problem?

I'm now getting this same error after the update today (but on 3.11.6-1 instead). I'm using packer if that helps.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

@Ambrosia:
can you paste the output of:

ls -lh /usr/share/ati/build_mod/libfglrx_ip.a
ls -lh /tmp/catalyst.XXXXXX/libfglrx_ip.a

also please remember that i'm not using/testing anything other than makepkg (and cower to check aur pkgs updates)

Now catalyst_build_module is able to use it by copying it to the tmp dir, here are atalyst_build_module lines:

    workdir=$(mktemp -du /tmp/catalyst.XXXXXX)
    cp "/usr/share/ati/build_mod" "${workdir}" -R

I had no problems with catalyst-test package, so I assume the problem is on your side.
I would start with making sure that there's no space in the directory name in which you are trying to build the package (makepkg doesn't like space character)

It's a really good card.  I went from 2 7950s to one of these, and I'm going to add another as soon as the non-BF4 cards become available.  I'm running eyeefinity so the 7950s got taxed pretty badly.

They also seem to have fixed screen tearing with Eyefinity when mixing different display interface types (i. e. Displayport, HDMI, and DVI).  No more screen tearing in Windows.....we'll see if that carries to Linux.

Got exactly the same problem.
Ran commands on a clean system install and neither directory holds that file.

nothing there
gonna try it by "hand" now...

edit:
makepkg by hand -> same result: failing to build (catalyst_build_module)

edit2:
After messing around in the pkg with no real result i just tried to copy the missing lib at his place..

/usr/share/ati/build_mod/libfglrx_ip.a

and was able to build flgrx.
(As far as i saw it the lib dont get copied in the pkg and thus it isnt there, after install, to build the module)

Yup, i coudln't build it directly either so i'm going to give your solution a try.
