2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

Getting the following two errors when trying to run alsamixer after upgrading to the latest kernel.  Reinstalling it and running alsaconf again didn't fix it.

ALSA lib simple_none.c:1216:(simple_add1) helem (MIXER,'Front Playback Volume',0,0,0) appears twice or more

alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: Invalid argument

Anyone have any idea what happened and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!   smile

Sweet, now I can play with myself.

Hello, poetofnumbers - already tried that but it didn't work.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

remove your entries from modprobe.conf and then!
rerun alsaconf or let hwdetect load your soundcard

Thanks for the suggestion, tpowa, but I've already tried that, too.  It didn't work either and I still get the same errors.  I've never had this much trouble with alsa before.   :?

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

Out of curiosity, I reinstalled Arch to see what would happen but after installing alsa, I still get the same errors when trying to run amixer, or alsamixer.

Okay, none of the fixes I've read about work, so I've gone ahead and filed a bug report on this one:

http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/3710

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

I have the same problem with the kernel 2.6.15-2 and with my Creative Soundblaster !
So, i must recompil my kernel, or find a the last version.

Is anybody has got this kernel ?

And, for the bug, how many time we must wait for a correction ?

Thanks,

Nicolas

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

Thanks for the suggestion, murataht, but I'm already using the latest rc.conf file and I don't have hwd installed (and don't really want to install it).  I'm using hwdetect instead.  It worked fine with the previous kernel and alsa.

Thanks again though, and perhaps your suggestion will be the fix for someone else.

Don't know exactly how long but I just noticed that Judd has taken assignment of this particular bug and he's usually pretty quick at fixing them, so probably not very long.   8)

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

me assigned it to him wink
but the question is how fast this can be tracked down, the kernel contains the latest alsa from alsa-project.
you guys with problems please go to the bug and enter your cards that are not working, that makes it easier for us.
thanks

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

just one thing what comes to my mind, is that the new alsa tools has not ben updated but are needed for the modules.
just a thought, i'm checkiug that now

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

Okay, thanks tpowa.  I've tried everything I can think of but nothing works.  I'm totally undated right now (except for kernel) and ALSA works, but if I put 2.6.15-2 on here, that's all she wrote, no matter what I've tried.

Hmm.. sorry, tpowa - can't do.  I don't keep any irc software on my box anymore.  Tried hanging out at Arch's irc channel for a few weeks once but it was a terribly unpleasant experience, so I'll have to just wait and see what should come of this one, I guess.  I'm currently back to the 2.6.14 kernel with no problem, so I'll keep using it until the new one if fixed.

Anyway, thanks again for your help with it.   8)

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

I'm kind of experince the same problem. Here today I wanted to shift filesystem (ReiserV3 to JFS). So I reinstalled the hole thing. But now I don't get any sound out of my speakers. There is no error or anything. All the modules are loaded, and I have permission for it.

Arch - It's something refreshing

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

Anyone with a broken soundblaster live / alsamixer (after upgrading to the 2.6.15 kernel) ever get it working again?

I've tried everything I can think of to fix it and have been searching for the web and the alsa website for two weeks now and find where others are having the same issue with the new kernel, but nobody has offered up any fixes, yet.

Need a fix soon if possible, because I'm already considering getting a new sound card.  I just can't stand it when something doesn't work.      smile

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

try to downgrade your kernel or try to update alsa manually from alsa-project.org

Re: 2.6.15 kernels break ALSA [SOLVED]

Hi, tpowa

Yeah, I've already tried both options and downgrading the kernel does allow alsa to work again, but upgrading from alsa-project.org doesn't.  Guess it'll have to wait until it's fixed either in the kernel, or in some new alsa files.  Thanks again, though!  smile

Hey, thanks for that, qwerty...  I was thinking about trying archck to see if that would fix the problem, so now I know not to bother with it.  There was a bug filed about this issue a week or two back at Alsa-Project and it has been fixed in cvs, but that's as far as it's gotten to my knowledge.

Ok, i'm going to rebuild kernel 2.6.14-archck7 and ati-drivers (maybe the last version) packages, for now it's the only thing i can do smile

To anyone with this same problem...

Out of curiosity, I just tried the new 2.6.15.1-1 kernel and that one also breaks alsa in the same way.   sad

Hi, tpowa, yes, sir... I've tried that, too.

I can't really think of anything else to try, except to wait for an alsa fix or a kernel fix.  It still works perfectly with the 2.6.14 kernel, but try to install any version of 2.6.15 and alsa breaks.  I've never had alsa issues with any of the previous kernels that I can remember.

Anyway, thanks for your help with this.  Hope you have a great weekend!  smile

At the end i've downgraded to kernel 2.6.14archck7 with newest ati drivers (8.21.7) and everything works properly... smile
