Bought a refurbished Lenovo G500 off ebay.  Installed Arch right when i got it.  Everything works perfect straight out of the box!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Hey, trying to get razer to release a synaptics driver for RB14 etc. Put it on facebook page, and submit support requests at their website.

I think they're more likely to pay attention if lots of people are asking for the same thing!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

No luck, got a rather (curt) reply from the support team (not sure who). Wonder whether it would be worthwhile to try to contact someone higher-up in the company directly (via paper mail/phone). I've seen good results from that in other circumstances.

In response to the request for contribution of a linux driver (patch) to support the touchpad:

'''Someday we may, until then it is up to the alternative OS community to provide their own support/ '''

And in response to asking whether it would be possible to get any information about the hardware so that we can write our own driver:

'''Sorry, as we are unable to provide these details.'''

Although I understand the desire to keep proprietary stuff...proprietary (if that is indeed the reason), I'm pretty bummed. Does anyone know razer's history with providing info? Looking at their mouse drivers, I guess they never released anything except the windows drivers (synapse or something). Are they historically non-cooperative/difficult to deal with/secretive? One of the last things I want with my hardware maker, tbh...

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Can you share /etc/X11/xorg-config.d/20*.conf and /etc/bumblebee/xorg.config.d/20*.config ? So far I'm having trouble setting up xorg for optirun usage, while trying to setup 20's setup (nvidia and intel, xorg and bumblbees), X reuses to start with nvidia-config setup.

[ 368.544278] [ERROR]Cannot access secondary GPU - error: [XORG] (EE) No devices detected.

[ 368.544305] [ERROR]Aborting because fallback start is disabled.

Been trying this but no dice.

Also, does nvidia-settings works for you? It complains I don't have the drivers loaded.

Edit: Sorry for my many edits, I've been learning in the process all this switchable stuff. It's been a trial-and-error stuff for me.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Hi all -

I'm here looking for some recommendations for a new laptop - mods forgive me if this is wrong place.

Basically I currently use an Asus eee1001p - it is absolutely perfect for my needs but is falling apart and ageing. It's very difficult to get 'netbooks' these days of course, and the whole thing about UEFI has completely spooked me about whether ones I've been looking at will work easily with arch or not.

Since the asus is my primary machine for work and study, my hardware requirements are obviously extremely light and I don't need anything fancy. My budget is maximum of US$500.

If anyone has a great idea off top of their head I'll be really grateful to hear it, otherwise I'll keep poking my way through this thread!

thanks a lot

Running arch on a similar Vaio S13, having trouble with the brightness control keys. Do they work fine with you?

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Apple MacBook Pro (5,3)

Core2Duo 2.8Ghz

Arch 3.12

Everything works after some minor tinkering mainly with the bootloader as dual booting using rEFInd with Mac OS X Mavericks
Also had to tweak synaptics slightly tro get the mouse working however nvidia drivers work really well.

Only big issue for me was broadcom drivers for the WiFi however have now got this sorted, everything works just not out of the box! Very happy with my system not quite as nippy as Gentoo however much preferred due to the way Arch is managed.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I had Arch running on a Dell Studio 1737 for the past 6 months without any major issues. I discontinued the machine because of hardware issues, but surprisingly I had less overall trouble with the machine on Arch than on Ubuntu. Try to keep a proprietary graphics driver current on PPAs without b0rking your system, that's fun. I'm sure it's just as likely with AUR software, but I have yet to run into problems with that.

The Netbook - Asus eeePC F201E - also runs fine. All necessary drivers can be found in the repos. Hardware acceleration is working like a charm (except with flash, of course). I ran into a little trouble with the EFI during the installation, but that was only due to my own inexperience.

I have a Samsung Ativ Book 2 NP270E5E that I've been multi-booting on, Arch is one of my OSs and it's been running quite well except for one recent problem that hopefully someone in the forums can help me fix.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Has anyone made any progress on this? I bought a blade 14 and loved most things about it but the touchpad has really been a deal breaker for me. I didn't realize just how important it was to me. I am pretty sure I am going to be sending it back unless anyone has a solution. I feel like I'm giving up but it just isn't something I can get used to.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo ThinkPad E330 type 3354-DMG (Intel Core i3-3120M).

WiFi controller Broadcom BCM-43228 a.k.a. BCM-4313 works with proprietary driver (broadcom-wl-ck-ivybridge package from linux-ck repo, or broadcom-wl-dkms from AUR for regular arch kernels). opesource driver (brcmsmac) included in the kernel recognises the device, but can’t handle it correctly.

the rest of hardware works right out of the box.

either UEFI and MBR boot work ok.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 11.6

Arch x86_64, 3.12.9_2-ARCH, with Openbox

All works extremely well out of the box, including the touch screen (tested under openbox). The screen brightness control touchs also work. As a side note, the screen quality is amazing. It holds its own against the Retina MacBooks.

Note that (i) boot in Legacy mode (got rid of Win 8.1) and (ii) restored the default boot options and unlocked wireless before installing.

The only thing I had to do was download this driver for the Wireless card: https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723au. As the laptop has no RJ45 port, I used an Apple USB to RJ-45 (I had one laying around, but there are cheaper options...), and the connection was made immediately.

1) The screen is not changing its orientation when the laptop is in tablet mode (but it can be hotkeyed)
2) The screen sometimes goes black when X starts. As the screen light keys work, it's not a big problem

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 11, core i3 380UM, Intel HD Graphics

Fantastic netbook, fits in backpack, great screen dpi, sturdy, silent, easy to access internals for maintenance.
Perfect for mine remote administration tasks.
Just base arch, i3wm, wicd and other basic tools, installed extra dram card and I have 4GB of RAM to play around wink

Cons:  RTL8188CE 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter (rev 01), but this is known issue..., mine has issues only for AP's that uses lower MTU than 1500.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y410P:
Intel Core i7
nVidia GeForce 750M
Intel Wireless N2230 Card w/ Bluetooth 4.0
JBL speakers
8GB RAM

I think that covers specs, now to move on: I installed Gnome 3 (I love gnome shell) and the only issue is that I can't get my nVidia card to work with nouveau or the proprietary module. bumblebee doesn't work either. Then again, this is my first nvidia computer, so I have never had to do it before. I might go ahead with a reinstall to try and fix it, but I don't know.

Strangly I have having the exact same issue with a Dell Inspiron 7720 Special Edition with the GT 650M. No matter what I have tried to do or how many different directionst that I try to follow it does not work. The card has even dissapeared from the pci device tree in lspci as if it is not connected, but then a couple of reboots later it is back. I have tried to configure Bumblebee with every possible combination of directions. I even tried a newer driver from the aur and the open source driver and still nothing. It is a big mess as nothing works at all. I have done multiple fresh installs and even flashed the bios and nothing has changed at all. I am thinking about making a thread about it, but this is the first time that someone other than myself has had the problem that I have seen that has not been two or three years ago.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have two laptops running Arch; with two completely different sets of challenges.

The first: Dell Inspiron 1545 With 2 Gig of ram, Intel Celeron.

you have to install with the ethernet cable plugged in because it has a Broadcom wireless card, which is not included in the kernel for some reason. In-fact, you have to get it from the AUR. The Vesa display driver works ok, but the Intel graphics driver installs, and runs better when you append "i915" to the kernel line. Everything else works great. I Dual-boot with this one with Windows 7, using Grub; no issues related to that at all.

The second: HP Pivilion dv6 with 4 Gig of ram, AMD Phenom II.

The only thing that irritated me with this one was that the vesa driver didn't work at all with this one. But installing the ATI opensource driver was pretty much straight forward. I don't dual-boot with this one, so I installed syslinux instead of Grub. Everything is working great.

I run updates almost everyday, and have had no problems.

with the exception of Gentoo, Arch has out-performed every other distro on both of these machines. I switched back from Gentoo because the almost un-measurable difference in speed isn't worth the time it takes to run updates, and install software on gentoo.

If you can't be helpful, don't say anything at all. Fair enough?

I just finished setting Arch up on my Toshiba Satellite s955. Everything seems to work just fine with XFCE except I haven't had time to test the webcam or SD card reader.
