Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

What benchmarking tools do you guys use? I'm constantly tweaking my settings, but I never sure if it's better. When you start to compromise between FPS, high details, and tearing (with lag spikes thrown in just to me you miserable), it;s impossible to benchmark my changes based on just how I "feel" it's running.

A benchmark tool for the SourceEngine would be amazing. I know they had one on Windows with Half Life 2.

I've seen most people use Unigine benchmarks in the past.  I honestly don't game on Linux (too painful...), so I don't really bother to run graphic benchmarks very often.

Yup, also noticed aticonfig errors. I think its because of a weak 290(X) support. + IIRC lano1106 reported problems with CF on newest catalyst.
Probably related: AMDOverdriveCtrl got problems with fan speed and overdrive

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have an issue with fglrx and gnome-shell.
I can't get vsync to work properly *without* the tear-free desktop setting (Tear-free is kind of crash prone for me and I would like to have vsync off for games like TF2).  It's a strange kind of sync problem, with the top of the screen having horrible tearing, gradually getting less and less until there is almost none at the bottom (regardless of the monitor I use).

Vsync works fine with nvidia, nouveau, intel, and radeon.
I've tried different CLUTTER_VBLANK variables, enabling vsync (without tear-free) in amdcccle, messed with various aticonfig options.

This is with three different monitors, two different graphics cards (7790 & 5450), and three different distros (Debian Stable, Ubuntu 13.10, Gentoo w/ gnome 3.10).  Arch isn't in that list but I figure this forum/thread is one of the best places to ask about this.

Interestingly, I think Unity (w/ compiz) may suffer from the same issue, so it might not be specific to gnome-shell only.  I haven't tried KDE/Kwin yet.

With compton (using openbox or something similar) I experience the same problem, even when I use

compton --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc

**BUT** when I use

compton --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc --paint-on-overlay

The problem goes away!  I wonder why?

Has anyone else run into this?

The whole Linux gaming scene has completely changed within the last year now that Steam went to Linux. I never get crashes with Dota, TF2, L4D2, or really any of the ~50 *nix games i have on Steam, but I do get texture errors with Tear Free. I love that you can set

export SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0

to interact with programs on other monitors without minimizing fullscreen windows (or running borderless window hacks).

epsilon72 wrote:

I get loads of texture errors when I play TF2 (or any game) with Tear Free on. I turn Tear Free off before I start playing a game and turn it back on after. My advice is to disable all vsync options in your compositor and just use Tear-Free.

epsilon72 wrote:

Yup, I don't use Unity but I use Compiz. Under composite I disabled "detect refresh rate", manually set the refresh rate to a value higher than my monitor, and enabled unredirect fullscreen windows. Under OpenGL (still in the compiz options), I disabled "sync to vblank." Maybe you can find equivalent options in Compton.

Strangely enough, my games and my windows all work perfectly with zero tearing on my main monitor even when Tear-Free is off. Screen tearing only happens on my second monitor; I wish I could enable Tear-Free for just that monitor.

WHY DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THAT?! But seriously, that info made my day. Thank you very much!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Guys, I constantly get hardlocks when I boot up on battery. My laptop is ASUS U38DT, its Radeon only setup. I use Catalyst PXP, I hadn't had any problems when I used open source drivers. It seems it got better since I've downgraded libdrm from 2.4.53 to 2.4.50. I've tried to set nomodeset but it didn't help. I experienced it with older versions of Catalyst and it lasts up to now. Any help ?

Hi, I wrote there a month ago. My problem is that when i try tu change the brightness using Fn+f2 or Fn+f3, the brightness changes only "on one step" and then the PC refuses to execute console applications and it becomes a problem to shut the computer down. The bug is both in KDE and Gnome, so i started to suspect Catalyst. Then i tried the open-source driver, and the bug disappeared. But I want to use the proprietary driver, and don't have any ideas. Could someone help me?

I remember you. You're the one with the AMD 3300M APU with Integrated Radeon 6480G and discrete 6740G aren't you?

Let me think...

I would think that you would install the catalyst-utils-pxp package when you install catalyst because you have a Hybrid iGPU + Discrete GPU setup.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hi, I started my laptop and put

packer -Syu

into the terminal. It responded with

error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)

and then a bunch of packages that require libgl. I chased down the issue to catalyst-utils.

When I try to upgrade catalyst-utils it gives me the above error. I had catalyst-hook 14-1 so looked at http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/ to see the latest version. I upgraded catalyst-hook to 14.3 but can't upgrade catalyst-utils. I tried to install catalyst-libgl and catalyst-opencl, neither of which are currently on the system, but they both respond that they conflict with catalyst-utils.

The system boots fine and will start X. My kernel is 3.13.8-1-ARCH 64-bit.

Thank you!

check this out (after adding [catalyst] repo to pacman.conf):

I installed the new packages at the same time as updating:

Thank you! That worked. I had tried removing all of the lib32 packages that seemed to involve catalyst but I guess I missed something.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have an odd one. After my 6670 died (well, it's in its' death throes) I replaced it with my old 4670, downgraded xorg and removed catalyst to replace it with catalyst-hd234k. Everything works, but tear free doesn't get saved.

I've read of the problem on dual head set ups, but this is single head only. My workaround right now is to launch amdcccle as a startup program so that I remember to manually turn tear free on, but any idea why it doesn't get saved.

For info,

aticonfig --set-pcs-u32=DDX,EnableTearFreeDesktop,1

doesn't do anything sad

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Switched to radeon to see how it would run, and im pleasantly surpised.

the main reason I even care for my graphics drivers and to play Diablo 3 and a couple other games. D3 runs fine in wine, but under radeon it was crashing, GLSL compilation error and segfaulting. Update to the versions from the mesa-git repository, and its running. ~7-10fps higher than under catalyst too, with no noticable graphical issues (played through a couple previously troublesome areas, to check for graphical errors or major slowdown).

Might stick with this boat until Gnome and Catalyst start playing nicely again. I like some of the gnome-3.12 features too much to go back to KDE or xfce

Hey, so does anyone have a nice set of instructions of how one migrates from the Open Source driver to AMD Catalyst? I'm surprised there aren't any on the Wiki...

Can the OSS drivers do crossfire, or re-clock the GPU, or set fan speeds? Last time I used them they couldn't, but if they can now...

@l0vot: Crossfire is still not supported but reclocking the GPU and adjusting the fan speed accordingly was implemented a few months ago.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I don't know if this belongs here, but I'm having a really strange problem after installing and configuring the Catalyst drivers. I managed to get "everything" working (that is, I can launch the XServer and it works) by following the instructions on the wiki but I'm left with a final problem I have yet to solve: GDM does not start. The system boots up just fine, but it doesn't get me to the GDM lock screen, just to a login prompt in a TTY. I have disabled and re-enabled the GDM service several times to no effect, I've tried reinstalling it, and I've tried launching it through the console, but nothing happens. On the other hand, if I run startx I get three XTerm consoles on a black background, from which I can call gnome-shell and get to a working desktop, but even there I can't launch GDM. It was working perfectly with the open source radeon drivers, so I don't really understand what the issue could be.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Hello everyone.

I'm currently having a problem with the fglrx  drivers as described in THIS thread I made.

If anyone here at the time to give it a look, and help out if possible, I'd be eternally grateful.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I have very strange problems which started to happen with 3.14 kernel and maybe 3.13 too.
I have laptop ASUS K55N with A8-4500M APU and HD7640G integrated graphics.
Now, first are coming issues with radeon driver:
3.14 kernel only black screen on early start. On late start I get messed screen (looks like broken display).
3.10 kernel it works like it should
But on both kernel my laptop overheats. It is at min. 60C on startup then while browsing or doing some installs/upgrades (not compiling anything) it easily gets to 95C and shuts down when it reaches critical temperature.

Second, fglrx drivers. They work also great. No overheat problem, 41C on startup, gets no more than ~60C doing some usual tasks.
But Gnome3 doesn't work, get Oh no error. Brightness controls via fn keys also are working, but the frustrating thing is that I have to manually raise brightness on every startup, because it's too dark.

To sum up, I would be happy if I get radeon drivers working as it should. I don't need brightness controls, I can set up them by echoing to brightness file or add startup command/script. I would like to solve overheat problem, but I have perfectly working fglrx driver.
So, is there a way to get Gnome3 work on proprietary ati driver?
Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Guys I'm planning to remove all archive catalyst repositories - my quota is reaching the limit and most of archive repos won't work because of newest mesa changes, so...
If you want to save some repo from the doom let me know - I could rebuild it for you.
I want to perform this erase withing two weeks.
I will leave all archive xorg repos and 3 main catalyst repos - [catalyst], [catalyst-stable], [catalyst-hd234k]

Hey, so does anyone have a nice set of instructions of how one migrates from the Open Source driver to AMD Catalyst? I'm surprised there aren't any on the Wiki...

Looks like there was no such a need. Got some commands to switch from [mesa-git] to [catalyst] tongue

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I supppose as long as you save all PKGBUILDs and stuff everything will be fine. Of course, if AMD's tarballs is retrievable.
