just to check-in, I've downgraded to 3.17 on father's HP 6830s too for the same reason.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Just upgraded to 3.18.3, same problem as with 3.18.2. hmm
HP 6370s, model FU487ES.

EDIT: Whoops.. it's still 3.18.2.. sorry. It's from core, I don't use testing.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@clfarron4 HP 6830s still has same problem on kernel 3.18.3, here are thermal_zone diffs:

3.17

cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
46000
46000
45000
46000
20000
50000

3.18.3

cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
46000
51000
44000
48000
20000

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

hi,

same problem here.

My laptop is ten years old HP without GPU.

root@:~# lspci

00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)

And everything works fine with linux3-17-6

3.17.6-1_root@:~# acpi -t
Thermal 0: ok, 40.0 degrees C
Thermal 1: ok, 16.0 degrees C
Thermal 2: ok, 44.0 degrees C

But all 3-18 versions make the fun keep running.

Apparently, the temperature of  "Thermal 0" is wrong. Maybe someone  got fahrenheit with celsius mixed up.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Yep, now I can confirm - same problem with 3.18.3 as with 3.18.2 kernel. I saw on my other machine it downloaded 3.18.4 kernel, so I upgraded my mirrorlist on my laptop to other mirror (old one had 3.18.3 (?!)) and then upgraded my system.

EDIT: Now I'm on 3.18.4 kernel on my HP 6030s, problem is still here. Fan goes nuts just in few seconds while booting and stays on at full speed. hmm
Downgrading to 3.17* again. hmm

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

It's been intermittent for me anyway over the last few days anyway so one boot isn't much to go on, but after going to 3.18.4 I found that only cooling devices 5 & 6 were in a 1 state, so though the fan was unnecessarily on, it wasn't on max.

I have found that the workaround of echoing 0 to the cur_state files has not prevented the fan from spinning up later on, if necessary. So I've stuck with doing that those boots I've had the issue.

EDIT: latest boot had the issue - thermal zone 5 of 80000 and 3-6 cooling devices on. So though intermittent, I am still seeing it with 3.18.4.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

Same issues with my HP 620: with 3.18.3 or 3.18.4, the fan is always on at full speed.
Downgraded to 3.17.6, hoping for a quick fix, I'll try to investigate on this bug / issues.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

So did anyone file bug report?

@clfarron4 was planning to do right? I think he/she takes care of kernel issues and was willng to file a bug report.

If already done, can you please share the link to it?

Thank you.

@armish: I was planning to file the bug @kernel.org, but before doing it I have to collect everything, which is a time-consuming deal... And I can't do it before the weekend starts, as I'm so busy at work. Sorry smile. If I'll be able to file this bug, I'll soon report here.

I just so happen to be rather busy at the moment (dissertation deadline this week, along with Greg doing TWO kernel releases this week) as well. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about it.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

I'm probably way off here, but I thought that needed commit (175f8e2650f7ca6b33d338be3ccc1c00e89594ea) mentioned here,  possibly fixes the issue?

Apparently (from that thread) it's in 3.19 but (was) not in 3.18. However, a search of 3.18.5 change log shows this:

commit c4302b5e47006d41c49ed10e66cea583658672e1
Author: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com>
Date:   Fri Dec 12 22:51:58 2014 +0100

ACPI / PM: Do not disable wakeup GPEs that have not been enabled

    commit 175f8e2650f7ca6b33d338be3ccc1c00e89594ea upstream.

In some cases acpi_device_wakeup() may be called to ensure wakeup
power to be off for a given device even though that device's wakeup
GPE has not been enabled so far.  It calls acpi_disable_gpe() on a
GPE that's not enabled and this causes ACPICA to return the AE_LIMIT
status code from that call which then is reported as an error by the
ACPICA's debug facilities (if enabled).  This may lead to a fair
amount of confusion, so introduce a new ACPI device wakeup flag
to store the wakeup GPE status and avoid disabling wakeup GPEs
    that have not been enabled.

    Reported-and-tested-by: Venkat Raghavulu <venkat.raghavulu@intel.com>
    Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <rafael.j.wysocki@intel.com>
    Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

Which doesn't read quite right to me - though I'm fairly clueless on the kernel side of things. hmm

Either way, it might be moot as the behaviour after applying that patch sounds familiar to my system at the moment:
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78201#c115

I've re-read that bug thread twice now and get lost as to what commits do what to the behaviour seen. I know the initial bug is different, but it looks like Manuel is also seeing the same behaviour we are?

Well, there's nothing for it, but to ask if it is indeed the same problem. I actually just did, linking this thread.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

OK, to see whether 3.18.5 solves this problem without having to enable [testing] (in all it's glory), I've setup the following repository:

[kernel-testing]
Server = http://dl.dropbox.com/u/298301785/arch/kernel-testing/$arch

To use it, you'll need to put it ABOVE [core] in /etc/pacman.conf and import my PGP key for verification of the repository (the packages are those signed by tpowa).

NOTE: This is just the kernel. You will have to build any modules and other drivers yourself.

@clfarron4

I tested 3.18.5 from your dropbox just now. Sadly, it does not fix the problem. I have pasted below the output of my syslogs:

I generated both journalctl dumps  from within my second boot, the LTS version of the kernel, hence the difference of "-1" to journalctl. The only significant difference I noticed was that the LTS kernel showed (either reported or issued) a whole bunch of "ACPI: Fan [FAN*] (off)" messages.

If you wish, I could report all these things directly on the kernel mailinglist. I did not do so already because it might be considered as breaking etiquette, and therefore, spam. For example, one of my dumps is from the LTS kernel, and not the last known working kernel.

Good luck with your thesis!

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@clfarron4 Thank you for setting that up. I've installed 3.18.5 from it and this is my first boot with it.

 # cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone*/temp
62000
61000
53000
23100
57000
cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state
0
0
0
0
0
1
1

Not sure on the last two cooling devices on and I can't remember if that was normal pre-3.18.

Anyway, my issue was intermittent so I'll try a few more reboots.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@skanky: "cat /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*/cur_state" is not too helpful because we don't know what these devices refer to. To know that, I do:

% for i in /sys/class/thermal/cooling_device*; do;print $i `cat $i/type` `cat $i/cur_state`;done
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device0 Processor 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device1 Processor 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device10 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device11 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device12 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device13 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device14 Fan 1
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device15 LCD 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device2 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device3 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device4 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device5 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device6 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device7 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device8 Fan 0
/sys/class/thermal/cooling_device9 Fan 0

Do note, the above command only works under zsh.

Alternatively, just do this:

% acpi -c
Cooling 0: LCD 0 of 24
Cooling 1: Fan 1 of 1
Cooling 2: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 3: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 4: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 5: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 6: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 7: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 8: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 9: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 10: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 11: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 12: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 13: Fan 0 of 1
Cooling 14: Processor 0 of 10
Cooling 15: Processor 0 of 10

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@prash - thanks for the acpi command.

Anyway, I've just had a repeat of the issue with 3.18.5.

EDIT:

I got the issue in 3/3 boots with 3.18.5, which was more often then with 3.18.4.
I've just gone back to 3.18.4 and first boot, the issue had gone.

So with probably nowhere near enough boots to confirm, indications are that 3.18.4 is better for me than 3.18.5.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

@skanky have you waited long enough (after the boot) for the cpu to cool down?

rpodgorny wrote:

Well, with this issue the fan would be on max for anything from 15-90 minutes or more. Without the issue, (IIRC) it sometimes kicked in for a second or two at boot, but often not.
When I echo the 0's to cut off cooling, it takes a minute or two to get to that state and the fan hasn't slowed down before that point. Not conclusive I know, but I am sometimes using the laptop in an area where I get complaints about 100% fan noise (though not always).

EDIT: for example this boot (the boot after the one where I posted the text above) had no fan acceleration at boot time at all. Still 3.18.4.

Thank you. smile

EDIT: Incidentally, 3.18.5 is in core now.

Re: Fan always on with 3.18.2-2

No luck with 3.18.5-1 also. HP 6730s, model FU487ES. Here are my outputs:

Kernel 3.17.6-1:
34000
19000
31000
32000
20600
20000

Kernel 3.18.5-1:
43000
43000
40000
45000
23100
100000

Back to 3.17.6-1. Again. hmm
