Hi,
I just installed Dropbox on archlinux under XFCE4. If I run the application from the menu nothing happens, but the instance of dropbox exists (I see it from the task manager). I don't see an icon tray either. The same happens if I try to run Dropbox from terminal.

Hi,
In order to get help, I think it would be good if you show the output you get when running dropbox from the terminal, there are good chances that some error log appears there when the application crashes.

Hi,
there's no output when I run the command "dropbox". The application just starts and it doesn't crash unless I kill it. Furthermore the command "dropboxd" (which I used to use months ago when I last installed arch-linux) tells me that the command is not found. I even tried the "manual" installation as explained in the wiki but when I run "dropboxd" nothing happens.

Are you sure it's not running? If you drop a file into your dropbox folder, does it get synced?

There is no dropbox folder since it never started, so I have not been able to configure my account and my folder. The only dropbox folder is the ".dropbox" in the home.

There have been some issues with dropbox lately that I don't think are quite hammered out yet. See here: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=193847 and follow the links on that thread to a few related issues.
In short, the problem of not being able to set up dropbox the first time you use it seems to only have been solved so far by downgrading.

Or by switching to a FOSS solution that actually works, like Syncthing...

Good point, I should have mentioned that. I've been using Syncthing for a few months and am extremely happy. I still have to use dropbox for shared folders with people who refuse to use anything else.
deathconscious: the last post in this thread might fix the issue without the need to downgrade: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192529
But yeah, +1 for Syncthing.

Dropbox renamed the binary "dropboxd" to "dropbox", hence the confusion. As said earlier, downgrading is the only real option (dropbox is really hard to debug. It doesn't give any information).

Seconded. The only problem is that it is hard to convince other people to switch (and it gets unwieldy when syncing with multiple people)

Sorry, didn't catch that! I rushed into the reply as I read yours Thanks everybody for answering.
By the way, I'm "forced" to use dropbox for University, while I use Copy for personal use. But I didn't know Syncthing so thank you jasonwryan.
I do have a question: do I have to prevent dropbox from autoupdating? If I run the downgraded version, configure my account and sync my files, will it stop working if I update it?

Unless the bug is fixed in the update. You can ignore single packages when running system upgrades. But before all that, see if the possible fix without downgrading works.

I tried the procedure in the post you linked. I downloaded the package, replaced the version in the PKGBUILD and ran makepkg -g. When I run makepkg -f I get the error
[mattia@maxwell dropbox]$ makepkg -f

EDIT: Sorry again, I posted without reading carefully. I actually DIDN'T do what as instructed. It works perfectly now, thanks again.

I don't know what you're trying to do. Just reinstall the regular version in the repos using pacman. Then try this fix: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1495654

Sorry nullified, I just posted impulsively without following the right procedure. I downgraded to version 2.10.52 and it works.
