As I begin to move away from my beloved yet unmaintained windowlab, I've decided to try DWM. Is there a way to get DWM to remember the preferred layout I use (I using floating and I'm lazy and don't want to set it every time I login).

You probably can change it so that dwm defaults to floating or try setting it only for some applications https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=153431

Take a look to the file config.h, the default arrange function is the first one in the array layouts.

Yes, I meant https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dw … t_floating , sorry for any confusion and thanks for fixing my sloppy post.

You would probably be better off using something like 2bwm or some other floating window manager. You're essentially using dwm in the exact opposite way in which it was designed to be used. Floating mode really only exists in dwm to accommodate windows that don't tile well (like pop-up windows) and isn't intended to be used for normal work.
