The problem: System freezes while booting before CLI login.

In short:
Laptop hangs while booting with any kernel between 4.1-ARCH/lts/zen/ck up to 4.6 i686 and x86_64. A hard reboot is required.
Environment
- Laptop: Intel Atom N450 "Pineview" (Intel NM10 Express / GMA 3150) Dell Mini 1012 laptop.
- single HD layout with no Raid, LVM nor encryprion (former install); same but with lvm2 (new install)
- syslinux bootloader with separate /boot on sda1
- (should) boot-up to CLI -> login & startx i3-wm
Test steps and test results
- Initial reboot (after install) does boot and run fine with the latest kernel; freeze upon any subsequent reboot.
- Other distros show the exact same symptom, eg Viperr (Fedora 23).
- linux-mainline hangs on boot too.
- kernels 3.x, 4.0.7-ARCH (and 4.0.8.Fedora23) are the latest that boot fine.
- kernel mainline 4.6 (but not ARCH-4.6.x) is the first that allows booting this device.
- System won't even start to boot if 'intel_ucode' is used: Arch i686 and x86_64 (i686 booted with it till arround kernel 4.1, not with 4.4.1).
- Unplugged any connected device
- Unactivated/activated wireless, ethernet etc in the BIOS
- Added MODULES="i915 intel_agp" in mkinicpio.conf then mkinitpcio -p <kernel>
- Tried all cheatcodes I knew and other, also to no avail... Until using the one that imsProphet suggested on page #2.

happens as i'm moving, with just the netbook, an android device (please forbid my big fingers / typos) and Internet access. not even a usb key, isn't that an interesting challenge?

In each case, keyboard has *no* effect at all. atm I found no way to input something, and could't gain access to journalctl -xb, /etc/fstab, blkid and friends.
With no live system I jav no more sezy ideas, and ask for your kind and brilliant ones

How about you download drivedroid on android and the archiso and boot from phone? That way you can mount partitions, arch-chroot and investigate/fix ? At the very least, make an attempt to enable your laptop to boot to console then you can continue your troubleshooting.

Just some more info for troubleshouting (thanks to chroot ) and before taking actions.
Surprisingly the last couple boot hanged up on "can't find '/dev/sda5'". Rather interesting as fsck is fine now, and chrooted system runs fine from sda5!

There was a "/root/tmp/" in journalctl that I didn't get where it came from.
Question: What's happening with 4x kernels on this netbook :?:
It has [AUR]xf86-video-intel-git (unsupported) installed but how could that prevent booting to console's unclear to me.

Corrected fstab that I had forgotten to remove /tmp from. As a result /tmp was mounted 2 times.
Still, booting this computer with 4x kernels makes the power button my only friend :-o

As for the issue, I made as much progress in troubleshouting it than I found inspiring information on it: zero or nada.
Reverting to linux-ck-3.19.8 and Arch runs fine (like with lts), though what does that solve? stays unclear not only for me it looks.

There was one time I ran pacman -U on one of my aur packages and the system went completely gone. Couldn't ssh in, nfs mounts were dead the whole thing was gone. Just what I had on the screen and the mouse pointer. Restarting brought it back of course, but it was really bizarre.
I may have to CONSOLE you about your usage of ridiculously easy graphical interfaces...

@Nomorewindows this issue started after I updated the Linux kernel to 4x, with standard pacman -Syu, after a less standard three months without connection.
boot still freezes atm, anytime I use one of the installed kernel linux-4.1.x. And disappears with their 3.x version.
I've considered the changes in filesystem support in recent kernels. Maybe some of the optimization options in my fstab are unsupported. Am removing them one by one atm: journal_sync_commit makes no difference. Will update as I try the other options.

Update: Noticed the "Starting Load/Save RFKill Switch Status of rfkill1" when the system hangs at boot with 4x kernels? Well a user made me discover the rfkill package wasn't installed until today:

Now that I installed Rfkill-0.5-1 the issue errr stays as it started. Locks up while displaying the "RFKill Switch Status".
journalctl (passw "sesameOpen") for the failed boot attempt with kernel linux-4.1.6-ARCH fallback shows an interesting kernel: Failed to find cpu0 device node and ACPI errors amongst other things
EDIT: Other have the same message (and some, issues) since linux-4.1.2: » linux-4.1.2-2 i686 "Failed to find cpu0 device node" boot msg.

Latest kernel linux-4.2.0-3 does not change the game. Anyone with advises on this issue please?
I've installed linux-4.2.0-3-ARCH and rebooted in fallback/single mode. Kernel command line (syslinux) is:

Arch boots until it hangs (the issue ;-) ) with a full-black screen (changes from previous 4.1 kernels).

You tried add graphics card driver to /etc/mkinitcpio.conf, ex.:
MODULES="... i915 ..."
and regenerate the initramfs:

At the very least, make an attempt to enable your laptop to boot to console then you can continue your troubleshooting.
The little laptop booted into console, always, and then started i3. Tthat must have seemed so casual, I forgot to make it clear right from the beginning, sorry about that.
Nevertheless I added the `i915` module to mkinicpio.conf as tommykr advised to do and rebuilt the kernel, with no visible result.
ANyway that install dated back to 3-4 years, I couldn't update xorg or evdev while running the 3.9x ck-atom kernel, and the partitioning layout was to be improved. So I reinstalled (trying out Architect in the process but it does not yet handle LVM) with the latest Arch-dual 2015-12 x86_64. Downloaded with torrent, shasum and signature all fine.
Live session and install went without a glitch.
The brand new *base* system with everything default kernel included, started just fine, YAISSE! While logged, I started to edit the network config and rebooted (*nothing* else, I mean it). And the boot hanged right like before, at the same line.
I will try other distros that ship a 4x kernel to check how they handle the laptop. If not then I'll know it's a kernel thing and will investigate in this direction. As I've just no idea what's going wrong between Arch with kernel 4+ kernel and this atom netbook.
Meanwhile if someone happen to have some light on that, please feel free to share, please!

Antergos stock kernel (I think it's 4.2.5) boots and runs fine with default option (= these of Arch).
linux-lts318 (AUR) by CLaire Farron also boots fine.
Arch stock kernel, *-ck, -zen, -lts or any Arch kernel 4+ hang.
I have no fu**ing clue what's causing Antergos to boot straight on that aging but rather common machine (Intel Atom), but this restricts the options to investigate --at least.

As Antergos hanged at boot on second --and else-- boots, just like Arch, I evaluated what did change between first and consecutive boots. The only change I could grasp between them (there may well be other though not from my hands) is the Ethernet connection: unset on first boot after base install vs configured afterward.
kernel linux-4.2.5-1-ARCH boot logs show errors that do not show up in linux-lts318:

blacklisted the `Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01)` and rebuilt the kernel
disabled wireless, then Ethernet in the BIOS
booted the stock kernel with "acpi=off"
But none of these stopped linux-4x hanging up at boot, right at the same point each try.
System runs fine with linux-lts318 but this is quite not optimal, is it?

Upon first re-install I tried any kernel cheat code that I knew/found, i.e:
- acpi=off / nolapic / noapictimer
- nohz=off / highres=off
- pci=nocrs
- nmi_whatchdog=2
- even `reboot={acpi,force,pci...}` ones, though I doubt it could help but hey!
Freeze each time, at the same point +/- a few lines after "RF Kill"
Commented out every line but « / » in fstab
Deactivated any options in the BIOS (very few on that Dell Intell netbook), e.g. Wireless, NUC, Speedstep; tried with AHCI/ATA modes.
With any kernel 3x the box works just fine; Arch (and various live systems) boot and runs *good*
Also the systems does *not* even start to boot if the 'intel-ucode' is present:
INITRD ../intel-ucode,..initramfs-linux.img'
Removing it allow a successful booting.
Is there anything else I can do or show up while the system is on with the latest ARCH kernel?

Hey hilltown. You're luckier! Being stuck on 3x has errr its charm, like unable to access my big xfs drive.
Actualy not on 3x since I built linux-4.0.7-2-ARCH on the Atom and that one boots fine --if intel_ucode isi removed from the cheatcodes.

Just a not as I booted with linux 4.4.0-rc7-mainline and at first thought it booted til the console...
Yeah, but it was the recovery shell. Next boots with 4.4.0-rc7 freezed at the same (apparent) stage, well into the boot process. E.g. config files are read and systemd-vconsole-setup succeeds. Little difference compared to the stock kernel. Joined the failed boot logs with the other @ https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/47509

1/ Arch x86_64 and i686
Linux mainline 4.4.1 hangs like the other 4.1x kernels.
Re-installed Arch x86 and can reproduce as with the x86_64 version of the distro. E.g. kernel linux-lts3.18 (re)boots fine.
Hang also happens after I unplugged any external device from the laptop.
2/ Fedora 23
I installed Fedora 23 on a spare logical partition and tested various 4x kernels, to confirm it's upstream issue. Here follow the results:
linux-4.2.3-300.fc23:
Runs just fine on first boot-up after installing the distro --> same as Arch.
Hangs upon the following boots --> same as Arch.
linux-4.3.3-301.fc23 and 4.1.0-1.fc23
Hang upon boot-up --> same as Arch.
linux-4.0.8-300.fc22
Boots up to the gui login / tty (where I can't login for some unknown hostname reason).
After it freezes, I can't see anything in the logs about a kernel panic which is making me think this is some kind of serious fault as the kernel doesn't even have chance to log any related output that I can grasp.
There are other bug reporting a similar critical issue though with later kernel versions, eg #45877 and #46894.
On the later a guy advised to continue the discussion on https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=110131
He also said « all the people encountering the bug were using UEFI » which does not seem to be the case for everyone using Arch --and my laptop is purely BIOS.
I'd be happy to provide further information/testing if it can be helpful.
