[SOLVED] startx failing after crash: potential issue with initramfs?

BACKGROUND:
My arch install has been running smoothly for months, but last night my laptop ran out of battery and shutdown/crashed. I plugged it back in and went off to bed.
When I tried to turn it on this morning, it showed a few error messages, and now startx command doesn't work.
Aside from the error messages and X issues, everything still seems to be working fine. I'm finding that a bit odd, since most threads reporting similar issues have their whole systems borked.
My immediate goal is to get X working again, but I also want to fix whatever damage may have been caused by the crash last night.

I'm at a loss here. According to the errors messages I'm getting, it's not just an X issue; from what I'm reading, my whole system should be hosed according to the error messages I'm getting.

Right now I'm thinking something related to mkinitcpio broke, but I'm not sure, and want some advice before I fiddle with it. I've included Xorg.0.log and my /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf

SYSTEM:
I'm using a Toshiba laptop with an intel proc
I'm using systemd-boot, not GRUB
My disk is fully encrypted

ERROR MESSAGES:
Immediately at boot, I get:

[Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Eratta; please update microcode to version; 0x25 (or later)
Initramfs unpacking failed: junk in compressed archive
starting version 234
[prompt to enter passphrase to decrypt my drive]

After decrypting my Luks volume, I get:

Arch Linux 3.13.3-1-ARCH (tty1)

tpm tpm0: Operation Timed out
DMAR: DRHD: handling fault status reg 2
DMAR: [DMA Read] Request device [00:16.7] fault addr 8cfff000 [fault reason 02] Present bit in context entry is clear
tpm tmp0: TPM self test failed
DMAR: DRHD: handling fault status reg 2
DMAR: [DMA Read] Request device [00:16.7] fault addr 8cfff000 [fault reason 02] Present bit in context entry is clear
DMAR: DRHD: handling fault status reg 2
DMAR: [DMA Read] Request device [00:16.7] fault addr 8cfff000 [fault reason 02] Present bit in context entry is clear

Pressing enter brings up:

Arch Linux 3.13.3-1-ARCH (tty1)

[host] login:

I'm able to login without any issues, and my system appears to generally run properly, however, when I try to start x with the startx command, I just get the first few lines of my Xorg log and my system hangs.

WHAT I'VE TRIED:
Reinstalling Xorg (sudo pacman -S xorg) did not solve the issue.

I started looking at the

[Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Eratta; please update microcode to version; 0x25 (or later)

error, and found:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/mi … de_updates and https://forums.archlinux.fr/viewtopic.php?f=15&p=162753

I didn't have intel-ucode installed on my system, so I installed it, and added a second initrd line to /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf

locate intel-ucode shows intel-ucode at:

/boot/intel-ucode.img

cat /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf returns:

title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
initrd /intel-ucode.img
options cryptdevice=UUID=47f045ee-9f41-4bb3-96d2-202189586fce:volume root=/dev/mapper/volume-root quiet rw

After rebooting, I got the

Initramfs unpacking failed: junk in compressed archive

error for the first time. I'm planning on undoing those changes, since my box was running fine previously, and installing intel-ucode ad adding a second initrd line has only caused more issues.

https://mzanfardino.wordpress.com/2012/ … rch-linux/ and https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=137961 both suggest rebuilding initramfs with mkinitcpio. Does that seem like the right next step? If so, can I run

mkinitcpio -p linux

directly from my system, or do I need to use a live USB (I'm assuming the previous folks used live USB since they couldn't login to their systems)? Mzanfardino didn't use any additional hooks with mkinitcpio even though he was using full disk encryption.

from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230115
I'm considering adding intel_iommu=off, but it doesn' seem a relevant fix for my problem.

Any suggestions?

Re: [SOLVED] startx failing after crash: potential issue with initramfs?

1) The microcode update needs to be first in the boot loader.
2) Your xorg log exits successfully, but that also looks like it could be an old log.  Where was that log file?

Re: [SOLVED] startx failing after crash: potential issue with initramfs?

title Arch Linux
linux /vmlinuz-linux
initrd /initramfs-linux.img
initrd /intel-ucode.img
options cryptdevice=UUID=47f045ee-9f41-4bb3-96d2-202189586fce:volume root=/dev/mapper/volume-root quiet rw

The initrd entries order should be reversed so intel-ucode is read before the initrd generated by mkinitcpio.

intel_iommu=off may well remove the DMAR errors.

posting only extracts from logs such as dmesg strips context making it more difficult to provide help.

Has X worked successfully under 4.13.3?
Edit:
Oh and welcome to the arch linux forums liftoff.

https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio … meters.txt

intel_iommu=    [DMAR] Intel IOMMU driver (DMAR) option
        on
            Enable intel iommu driver.
        off
            Disable intel iommu driver.
        igfx_off [Default Off]
By default, gfx is mapped as normal device. If a gfx
device has a dedicated DMAR unit, the DMAR unit is
bypassed by not enabling DMAR with this option. In
this case, gfx device will use physical address for

Re: [SOLVED] startx failing after crash: potential issue with initramfs?

@Trillby, You're very right, that was the wrong log. I've edited my original post with the correct log. Looking at the two logs side by side, there doesn't appear to be any difference (other than the old log actually exiting succesfully).
@Trillby and loqs, Thanks! Switching initrd order removed both the messages before decrypting my volume (TSC_Deadline and initramfs unpacking).
@loqs, great question about X working properly under 4.13.3! I hadn't rebooted after updating to 4.13.3 yesterday; I'm betting that's the problem I'm having with X.
@cambion.web and loqs, thanks for the info.

Since it seems the issue I'm having with X is related to 4.13.3, I'm planning on rolling back to the previous kernel following the instructions at: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel

Thanks guys! Really appreciate the help; marking this solved.

Re: [SOLVED] startx failing after crash: potential issue with initramfs?

You might want to try the intel_iommu parameter or switching to linux-lts to avoid using an out dated kernel for the foreseeable future.

Re: [SOLVED] startx failing after crash: potential issue with initramfs?

Awesome!!
Added intel_iommu=off to my kernel parameters and X works again (didn't downgrade the kernel)
Thanks for your help guys, this was a great introduction to the forums.
