[unsolved] Screen goes black randomly on Skylake

Hi,

I've got a recurring problem on my laptop: the screen turn black and shutdown (no backlight) at random moment, the only to return to normal is either restart or suspend/wake-up. When I say random time, it can be for example okay for few days, then start to turns black three times in twenty minutes, even sometimes after 50 seconds.

The fact is that there is no logs of this error in dmesg nor systemd's journal, so I can't trace it back. I'm running a Skylake processor on an intel integrated CG, I tried tuning X11 settings for drivers configuration, but didn't changed. I also tried different configuration on backlight thinking it might be that, but did not work either. No info on the Internet about this specific failure, so I start to get a bit lost, but was thinking that it might be an hardware failure. What do you think? (its really annoying) Thank you!

I would be a millionaire if I had a nickel for every time that someone mentions this, only to be proven wrong because they were looking for the wrong things. It's not that I don't believe you aren't able to troubleshoot this, however we can only even attempt to help you if we have some actual diagnostics from your system and often a problem becomes apparent with enough eyeballs. So it would be much appreciated if you could post these logs and information on which X11 driver/configuration you have attempted to use, within [ code ] tags.

Re: [unsolved] Screen goes black randomly on Skylake

@V1del: you're right, I should have done that before. The error message was actually not shown because it was put in thoses of kernelspace's; i'm sorry for you that you did not get a penny for this one, maybe an xss script could do that for ya.

The configuration is quiete simple: x11 (start at login by user), i3. I also had tested UXA method.

# x11 conf for intel
Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"

   Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
   Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option "TearFree" "true"
   Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

After investigation, it looks like a i915 bug, some reports have been made with a similar call stack but not for this one exactly. I'll report it later.
