[Solved] No sound on headphone jack(s), internal speakers are working

Hello,

and please excuse me if I'm not posting this in the correct section or should have used an older thread.

On my Dell Latitude E7470, the audio output through the headphone jacks (both, of the Laptop itself and of the docking station) stopped working yesterday.  It worked well for over a year before.

I don't get any error messages and all programs show that sounds are played correctly, I just don't hear a thing from any headphones or speakers I tried.  Of course I tested them with other devices on which they work, so this shouldn't be an issue of broken hardware.  When I unplugg the headphone or switch to the laptop's own internal speakers manually, all sounds play.

My problem may be related to this one, but in my case, as I said, I still have sound on the internal speakers.  Also, I'm using pulseaudio without the explicit ALSA programs, so I don't even have applications like amixer and aplay.  Could this cause my problem?  I haven't changed my configuration and it worked before, though.

Outputs of fuser and pacmd (while spotify is playing over headphones, that is, it seems to play but there is no sound):

$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     BEN. PID ZUGR. BEFEHL
/dev/snd/controlC0: gdm 464 F.... pulseaudio
                     fspreck 799 F.... pulseaudio

Thanks for any help!

EDIT:  I also tried stopping pulseaudio, moving ~/.config/pulse to pulse.backup and restarting pulseaudio to renew the pulse configuration.  Still no sound via headphones.

Re: [Solved] No sound on headphone jack(s), internal speakers are working

Solved it!  Or at least found a workaround that does the trick for me:

I realized that the problems occured after the first reboot after the kernel update from 4.13.9-1 to 4.13.11-1.  Switching to lts kernel brought back the sound, so the non-working output seems kernel related.

I know that this is no real solution since probably also linux 4.13.11-1 should be able to play sounds via headphones.  However, the lts kernel works for me so far, so -> [Solved].

I had the same issue and found a solution here.

Installing alsa-utils and running alsactl restore did the trick for me.

Thx this also works here. However is there a permanent fix to this problem? Btw, what is the problem?

Re: [Solved] No sound on headphone jack(s), internal speakers are working

There have been a lot of changes between now and three years ago. You are more likely to see the fall out from https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1937256 than whatever the original issue was.

Closing.
