wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

I'm unable to connect to a wireless router with wpa_supplicant timing out on authentication/association.

System is up to date as of an hour ago.

I use systemd-networkd and an interface-specific wpa_supplicant unit file to connect to wireless on startup and here is what I see in the journal after booting.

journalctl --pager-end --boot=0 --unit=wpa_supplicant@wlo1.service

I have turned both of these services off for troubleshooting, so there's no other network management service interfering.

Some troubleshooting steps I have attempted:
*running wpa_supplicant with the wext driver.  ie.

wpa_supplicant -Dwext -i wlo1 -c <(wpa_passphrase "Harbour View" "<PASSPHRASE>") -d

Same error.

*Disabling wireless security on the router and connecting with iw... ie.

iw dev interface connect "Harbour View"

But running iw dev wlo1 link after shows:

Not connected.

...and wpa_supplicant -i wlo1 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant-wlo1.conf -d with the following configuration file.

network={
   ssid="Harbour View"
   key_mgmt=NONE
}

Same authentication timeout issue.

*Downgrading the kernel to the version in use when I last successfully connected to a wifi network with the thought that perhaps a bug was introduced in the module for my wireless card.

pacman --upgrade /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-4.13.11-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz

...then rebooting and running wpa_supplicant from the command line again. Same error. (I have since reverted to the latest kernel.)

*Changing the reg domain to match what the router seems to be using and re-running wpa_supplicant from the command line.

iw reg set NL

Same error.

*Upgrading the firmware for the router (TP-Link WR-841N) to the latest offered by the manufacturer and reconnecting.  Same error.

Things to note:
*Successful connections to this wireless network have been established with 2 different smartphones (one iOS, one Android) and a MacBook Pro.
*I have been using this same hardware and setup with Arch for just under a year and have successfully connected without issue to my home wireless router and several others during that time.
*I believe (I'm not at home so can't confirm) my home router is set to N-only mode.  Unfortunately, the TP-Link router I'm trying to connect to only provides 2 mixed-mode options (b/g & b/g/n) so I'm not able to try this.  I'm trying to find a way to force this on the client-side.

I've also looked at the following posts that mention similar issues:
*https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=222420 --> but have no option to enable IOMMU in my BIOS.
*https://superuser.com/questions/911635/ … -times-out --> but am not using iwlwifi as I don't have an intel card.

So, I'm running out of ideas and could use some help.  Thanks for taking the time to read.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

Have you tried (since this problem appeared) connecting to a different router? For example, if you set up a wi-fi hotspot on your android, are you able to connect to it?

Could you post an entire dmesg from booting up, trying to connect to wifi? For example, does your wi-fi driver say it loads some firmware (e.g. from linux-firmware)? In which case, it might be worth trying downgrading linux-firmware.

Also, I know you said you tried connecting without a passphrase, but there's always a chance that wasn't set up correctly in the rush of the moment. So just to confirm: You use "<PASSPHRASE>" in your wpa_passphrase command. Any reason you're not using single quotes here? Just wondering if your password contains $var or some other bash-expandable string.

Just some shots in the dark...

Wireless MAC filtering is disabled on the router.  The router settings were setup using the Quick Setup option, so default settings except for password changes.

Good question. I failed to mention this initially as I have in fact tried connecting to the Android hotspot since this issue appeared and see the same authentication timed out error.  I had never tried connecting to the Android hotspot from this laptop before.

Below is the full dmesg output post boot, including connecting via USB-tethering to the above-mentioned Android device.

Note that I successfully connected to a different wireless network since upgrading to the latest linux-firmware.  However, I just downgraded to the previous version just to be sure:

...rebooted and tried again, but see the same error.

There is no variable expansion in the ssid or password string, and I have no particular reason for using double quotes instead of single.  For good measure I tried with single quotes but see the same error.

wpa_supplicant -i wlo1 -c <(wpa_passphrase 'Harbour View' '<PASSPHRASE>') -d

In one of my earlier attempts I also changed the ssid to "HarbourView" (no spaces) and re-ran wpa_supplicant from the command line with no quotes at all but saw the same error.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

Thanks to both @seth & @GenkiSky for the suggestions so far.  Given everything I've tried up to this point, I think I've ruled out the following as causes of the issue:
*bugs in either the kernel module for my wireless card or associated firmware (downgrading both linux & linux-firmware didn't change anything)
*the wireless router simply not working (can connect just fine with other devices)
*wireless driver issue (have tried with both wext & nl80211)
*user error (eg. having other network management services running, typing ssid and password incorrectly) -- have I missed anything else obvious?

So, I'm thinking it must be the combination of my setup (wireless card & wpa_supplicant) + the router configuration that is causing the issue.  This is why I mentioned using n-only on my home router as I've read that mixed-modes can cause problems.  Also, that Super User link in my initial post mentions disabling n-mode as a solution. I have yet to find a way to either force or disable n-mode for my wireless card but will keep digging.  In the meantime, I'm more than willing to try other suggestions.

seth wrote:

I installed the LTS kernel, rebooted:
uname -a

Linux archlinux 4.9.63-1-lts #1 SMP Sat Nov 18 13:31:53 CET 2017 x86_64 GNU/Linux

and then ran:

wpa_supplicant -i wlo1 -c <(wpa_passphrase 'Harbour View' '<PASSPHRASE>')

...but see the same error.  This makes sense to me as I was able to successfully connect to a different wireless router last week and had already tried downgrading to the running kernel at the time and then attempting to connect to my current wireless router -- also without luck.

Does the fact that nohwcrypt is the only option that appears under parm mean that this is the only setting I can change for this module?

There is no bluetooth hardware on this laptop.

lspci -v | grep -i bluetooth

&

lsusb | grep -i bluetooth

return nothing.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

To check if bluetooth is loaded, I think you should use lsmod. I don't think bluetooth would show up as a separate PCI device. To disable bluetooth, see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Po … #Bluetooth

EDIT: Though since no bluetooth is mentioned in your systemctl list-units, that's probably a dead end...

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

Looking back at this, some final thoughts:

1. Have you looked into the "ACPI Error" in your dmesg? Sounds somewhat concerning. Probably not related, but...
2. Might be worth making sure your BIOS is up to date
3. Might be worth trying one of those $5 USB wifi sticks, it would be very telling if that didn't work either. I think those are handy to have lying around anyway.
4. I wouldn't rule out a hardware failure.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

It's the only option - can you access the router unprotected (no wpa/wep)?
And, stupid guess, but: what If you alter the SSID to not include a blank?

It's the only option - can you access the router unprotected (no wpa/wep)?

No.  Same issue.  See the attempted troubleshooting steps in the original post.

seth wrote:

And, stupid guess, but: what If you alter the SSID to not include a blank?

Also no.  See post #5.

Looking back at this, some final thoughts:

1. Have you looked into the "ACPI Error" in your dmesg? Sounds somewhat concerning. Probably not related, but...

Yes. If I recall correctly the issue appears only on HP machines and is the result of HP not adhering to some low level specification. There is another forum post regarding this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=223804.

GenkiSky wrote:

2. Might be worth making sure your BIOS is up to date

There is a BIOS update available. I'm hesitant to go down this path though. Especially given I've had reliable wireless connectivity for the past year with the current BIOS.

GenkiSky wrote:

3. Might be worth trying one of those $5 USB wifi sticks, it would be very telling if that didn't work either. I think those are handy to have lying around anyway.

Agreed. I actually have one, but am away from home and didn't bring it with me sad

GenkiSky wrote:

4. I wouldn't rule out a hardware failure.

Possibly. There were some disk sector errors a month ago, but after running fsck the machine has been stable since, including connecting to wireless access points.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

I arrived home this week and had the same problem connecting to my home router that I had successfully connected to for the past year.  So...almost certainly a hardware failure.

Not sure if this counts as "solved" ?

Your iw dev wlo1 scan command returned ouput from the card just fine. It might not be.

Have you tried the netctl way of connecting. Make a copy of one of the example profile files in /etc/netctl/examples, move it up one directory, edit with your ssid and password and start it. Don't forget to ip link set wlo1 down first or netctl will fail. I litterally never use wpa_supplicant and wpa_passphrase commands any longer. Try just to rule out human/syntax error.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

EAPOL: Supplicant port status: Unauthorized

Was this solved? I'm having the same issue. All 16 access points on other routers which I tested with my laptop work though.

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

Is your router set to use specific wireless channel ? If so try to set it to auto (if router supports that).

Re: wpa_supplicant authentication timed out

(sorry if I'm hijacking this post)

Thanks, but he router was already set to auto. I'm getting a lot of "martian" messages from the kernel. Other than that, here's some output:
