Computer restarts when cold booting

I have this weird issue where, if I cold boot my machine, it restarts again.

I don't have any login manager and I login on CLI and use startx. Sometimes I put my login info -- and the second it reaches the desktop it restarts. I have also tried just sitting at the login prompt and sure enough it restarts then too. Also once it restarts, I don't have any problems in using the machine. Strange thing is if I reboot or even if I shutdown and restart the machine -- then it works just fine.

I get the mei and mei_wdt and mei_me errors, but that doesn't seem to be related to the machine restarting on cold boot.

Here's dmesg

But the restarts on cold boot remain.

So my question is -- Is it my HDD that is the problem or some other hardware failure? What should I start looking into? This machine is quite old with me having used it for 8 years after buying it used on Craigslist, but if it still works, I would like to extend it's life as long as possible.

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

Can you post a journal from a cold boot?
Also, what does "cold" actually mean: full power cycle or full power cycle in the morning after a cold night?

Edit: realizing that I should be more unambigious: could this be a temperature issue?

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

I have not seen stiction problems with hard drives for a long time, but Seth may be on to something.

The latter.

It could be related to stiction. not sure though. Are you saying the hdd platters are too cold for the machine to work in the first go around after a cold night?

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

It's not necessarily the HDD, could also be some static build-up or some loose contact in cable that wires the reset button or whatnot.
Though the pending sector would point the HDD.

You could check the behavior when lettinig the system stay at the bootloader for a while before booting and alternatively just heat it up w/ an external power source (aka hair dryer) to get a better idea on whether it's actually a temperature issue or rather related to the long downtime.

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

Sat at the login screen... and same thing happened. It reboots the first time I start after an elongated period of time. Subsequent reboots have no issues.

Next test : Hair dryer

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

How about ruling out the hard disk to start off with by disconnecting the hard disk power and SATA cables, then boot and run from a usb boot disk to see if it's your hardware in general?
If you have issues without the hard disk, it could it be the power supply which starts working better when things have warmed up?
Otherwise I'd go for the hard disk being the problem what with the read failures and Power_On_Hours = 60550 (6.9 years!), so you've not done that badly out of it for a basic desktop drive!

Cheers

Thanks Paul. I did what you suggested and I removed the HDD completely and also disconnected the HDD fan from the MB. Started up the machine and I got 2 alerts about "Rear Fan Failure" & "Primary HDD not found". I went into setup and made sure my USB was in the list of boot devices and then saved... got back to the same screen with the 2 alerts and hit F1 to continue -- which then proceeded to start up ArchLinux from the USB.

No Shutdowns/Restarts !!

So it could be the HDD -- or it could still be the PSU --wherein the additional power required by the HDD is too much to handle for the PSU(probably due to degradation over time) and that's why having an HDD makes it restart the first time after a cold boot. I'll see if I can find a spare HDD somewhere to make sure.

But you are right, I have had this desktop for longer than I can remember and I have not had any issues until now. The HDD has had 6.9 years of life -- the computer is older since I had put this HDD in storage for a long while when I was using a different 1TB drive in the desktop. I moved the 1TB drive to my NAS and went back to the 80GB HDD that originally came with this desktop.

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

Finally got a chance to put in another of my HDDs, and it restarted again. So now I am not sure what the issue is.

My guess is that PSU, but I am not sure what the problem is, because it definitely provides the initial startup power required by the HDD, but then switches off and restarts. I'll try with a USB key one more time after keeping the computer shutdown for the whole night before trying it out.

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

You dvd drive should easily suck thrice as much watts as your HDD… so unless there's some leak/shortcut on the HDD connector, it should reliably knock out your PSU (esp. when writing)

Re: Computer restarts when cold booting

Do you unplug your PC from the wall everytime you experience this issue?

I remember having a motherboard that power cycled like that everytime the PSU was unplugged from the wall (which I typically do when I switch off the PC for the night).

You can try and check if it only happens after being unplugged from the wall.

No I don't. the unit stays plugged in all the time. No UPS or anything either.

I might have to look into that. But considering that this same computer and also others with better configuration are available for $50 on craigslist all day, I don't want to put too much into it either. If it dies, it dies. Time to move on.

I have another 10 year old 15.6" Toshiba laptop --- that my wife used during her school days -- that I can use as a desktop.

Yes, this is a typical behaviour with several ASUS motherboards, and with some BIOS versions. That said, it power cycles once during UEFI boot, 1 or 2 seconds after being powered, not after it has reached the bootloader.
