Slow speed & kworker taking over cpu when connected to 5GHz WiFi

I am having a very odd issue that occurs only when I am connected to my home router (a TP-Link AC1750). It does not seem to occur when connected to my mobile hotspot.
Symptoms include extremely slow speeds and the process kworker/3:1+events_freezable taking over the CPU (fluctuating between 60% and 97% usage).
I do have another Arch install, albeit with a somewhat different configuration, connected to the same network. No issues on that machine.
In search the forum, I discovered someone experiencing a similar issue here, but no explanations or solutions were offered.
I am not sure where to begin troubleshooting this. Thoughts?

Update:
In further inspecting the issue, I have noticed that it is actually 5GHz WiFi connections where the issue exists and it is not present on 2.4GHz signals. Nothing to do with my router I suspect.
