SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

SOLUTION:

I needed the 4.20 kernel

- OP

***

I have an Intel i7 9700k cpu with an integrated UHD 630 gpu running on an MSI mobo with a Z390 chipset. It is a sweet setup and lightning fast. However I am unable to get the i915 driver to load. When I run dmesg and journalctl there is no mention of i915 at all. Its as if it doesn't even exist. When I run glxinfo I get "unable to open display"

I found a post here where someone is running an Intel i9 9900k on an Asrock with a Z390 chipset. This chip is the same series as mine and the poster got the video working by using linux-drm-tip-git from AUR. This is the post: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=242465

I am trying the linux-drm-tip-git package but I think it requires an advanced user.

Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?

lspci
dmesg

glxinfo requires a running X11 server (and display)

Edit: you can paste from console following https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pastebin

Xorg and Gnome are both installed.

I now know that Xorg is failing to start.

Perhaps I need to install a driver?

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

@lenhuppe the outputs requested plus Xorg.log will help others understand what is currently occurring on the system.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

I am trying to get my xorg log file onto my MacBook so that I can post it here.

I have dropbox installed and now I have to figure out how to set it up from a command line.

Thank you so very much for being patient.

If the system has an internet connection please see the tip box from  List_of_applications#Pastebin_clients.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

You don't need your macbook or whatever, see the link I posted in comment #2
Also include the output of the commands requested in that post.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

Please edit your posts and wrap the  output in code tags.
According to https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/DRM_I915.html the chip seems only added in the 4.20 kernel, see eg. https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-mainline/

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

https://github.com/torvalds/linux/commi … c76f763552 so linux-mainline 4.20-rc7 which should be released in a few hours should progress further.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

I built the linux-mainline 4.20rc6-1 kernel

I then edited my /boot/loader/entries/arch.conf file accordingly

The system boots and I can see that i915 is loading:

$ dmesg | grep i915

From here I think that its an Xorg config problem.

$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep intel

From that first line I can see that Xorg needs to be reconfigured for the new kernel.

Those are the bootctl parameters I used before upgrading the kernel.

Thanks !!!

No, you don't.

Xorg is running just fine.  You are just not telling it to do anything.  Post your ~/.xinitrc.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

I don't have a ~/.xinitrc file. Please allow me to back up and explain what I am doing here.

Prior to this i7 system I had an AMD FX cpu with a Radeon video card. Setting up Gnome was very simple:

$ sudo pacman -Sy xorg-server xorg-xinit gnome gnome-tweaks
$ sudo systemctl enable gdm

I have now switched from BIOS/Grub to UEFI/systemd-boot.

I have also compiled the mainline kernel per the advice given here.

Having said all of that, I now have a fresh system with the mainline kernel compiled and installed. I am not sure of the best way to go about setting up systemd-boot to load the mainline kernel. I am also not fully versed on how that will impact the X and Gnome installation scripts when I run pacman.

Thanks!

Then that perfectly explains your symptoms.  Create one.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

These links cover using startx to start gnome Xinit#xinitrc GNOME#Xorg_sessions
Edit:
If you want to use GDM I would suggest starting without having enabled the service and seeing if it starts a Wayland display server.

Thank you for pointing out that mistake. I knew better but didn't do better.

Re: SOLVED: i915 driver will not load

Voila! The mainline lernel was the answer.

This is no doubt the nicest Linux box I have ever seen or used.

I am indebted to all who have helped me get to this point.

I will pass along the favor ...
