AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

i have currently done a fresh install of Arch linux.  so far i have been unable to find out why my new laptop Aspire 3 A315-21G-91JL has a screen that flashes occassionally.  Quite an annoying bug.  is there a fix for this issue yet.

i have these opensource drivers installed:

xf86-video-amdgpu
xf86-video-ati

i do not have catalyst installed.

please help me.  i really need a fix for this

ie  for some reason my laptop has two graphics cards APU and Radeon 520 graphics card

Re: AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

Doesn't work is not an error message, post tangible logs likely journal and xorg logs at least.

FWIW there have been some known reports for issues with radeon on newer kernels, so you might want to properly switch to AMDGPU as a test.

Mod note: Moving to NC...

Re: AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

after a bit of investigating.  it looks like all the default settings are correct.  however, there was a warning in xorg.log saying:

AMDGPU(0): Chipset: "Unknown AMD Radeon GPU" (ChipID = 0x98e4).

it seems to me that this chipset needs to be added to the ids for the amdgpu driver

Re: AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

the other settings have used is in the mkinitcpio modules part where i put amdgpu first and radeon second and the did a mkinitcpio -p linux on it.  didn't seem to make much difference.

i have kept all other default settings though.

The id is not present in https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/drm … amdgpu.ids
which arch provides or the current upstream master.  You could ask upstream to add it although the strings use appears only to be cosmetic.
Edit:

Is the APU not an R2 Mullins which is classed as Sea Islands and supported by amdgpu with the switches V1del linked to?
Please also provide the requested outputs also noted in post #2

Re: AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

i have managed to blacklist radeon in the grub.cfg file.  did the usual grub-mkconfig etc and no change.  i still have flickering.

i also added to the mkinitcpio.conf file under modules amdgpu  this also made no difference.

i've even removed xf86-video-ati and it makes no difference.  quite frustrating

Re: AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

Thanks however please don't quadruple post but edit to amend existing posts with new information.

Now that you've successfully switched to amdgpu there's a few other things we can try, first the sledgehammer, add to your kernel parameters:

amdgpu.dc=0 amdgpu.dpm=0 amdgpu.aspm=0 amdgpu.runpm=0 amdgpu.bapm=0

if that helps, try to remove them one by one until you've isolated a hopefully single crucial option.

can you please explain what these options mean.  i would hate to accidentally fix the problem and not know what fixed it

i've tried the amdgpu.dc=0 and i got the black creen of death on loadup.  had to use rescue disk to get it back.

i'm a bit scared to use any of the others to be honest as i don't want to damage my new laptop

i have currently done a fresh install of Arch linux.  so far i have been unable to find out why my new laptop Aspire 3 A315-21G-91JL has a screen that flashes occassionally.  Quite an annoying bug.  is there a fix for this issue yet.

i have these opensource drivers installed:

xf86-video-amdgpu
xf86-video-ati

i do not have catalyst installed.

please help me.  i really need a fix for this

ie  for some reason my laptop has two graphics cards APU and Radeon 520 graphics card

i have removed those drivers and am currently using the kernel driver amdgpu, and is still flickering.  please mark this as the most annoying bug

Re: AMD A9 9420e APU and AMD Radeon 520 Screen Flickers

what i have done so far is:

1.  in grub settings i have put in kernel default settings mitigations=auto and modprobe.blacklist=radeon and used grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
2.  in the mkinitcpio.conf file under modules i put amdgpu and then did a mkinitcpio -p linux command
3.  in rescue mode i used the command X -configure to create a xorg.conf file.  copied it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/xorg.conf

even after these changes i was unable to stop the flickering sad

Stop doing quadruple posts... Remove that xorg.config, and then use those parameters, they are not dangerous, they will increase power draw because they disable some downclocking functionality, but they are crucial to identifying the cause of the issue. Keep the DC away if need be but definitely try runpm and dpm

sorry mate, i'm really new to this forum.

in my grub.cfg i have now got radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1 in the command line.  did a grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg to make those changes permanent.  did  a reboot.  the screen still flashes, but it took a little while longer this time.

anything else you would like me to try??
