terminal emulators not working after update and package install

Hello,

as it says in the subject I have the weird problem that I suddenly can't open my terminal emulators(e.g terminator,gnome-terminal) anymore. In text mode I installed xterm which is working, however I'd still like to use other emulators.

I was on holiday and did a system update earlier today and after I installed the ltspice package from the AUR and that is when the terminal problems began(after a reboot).

In various discussions I read that this problem could have to do something with the locale but my output is

LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

the content of locale.conf is:

LANG="de_DE.UTF-8 UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8
LC_TIME=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MONETARY=en_US.UTF-8
LC_PAPER=en_US.UTF-8
LC_MEASUREMENT=en_US.UTF-8

I already tried locale-gen --purge, but trying gnome-terminal afterwards outputs this:

# _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation dconf (DConfSettingsBackend) for ‘gsettings-backend’
# watch_fast: "/org/gnome/desktop/interface/" (establishing: 0, active: 0)

# watch_established: "/org/gnome/desktop/a11y/" (establishing: 1)
# _g_io_module_get_default: Found default implementation gvfs (GDaemonVfs) for ‘gio-vfs’
# watch_fast: "/org/gnome/terminal/legacy/" (establishing: 0, active: 0)
# unwatch_fast: "/org/gnome/terminal/legacy/" (active: 0, establishing: 1)
# watch_established: "/org/gnome/terminal/legacy/" (establishing: 0)

Frankly I have no idea what I could do and could really use some help.

Cheers,
Martin

Welcome to the forum. There are several topics about this issue; some of them suggest setting the language in GNOME solves it.

Welcome to the forums.  Please edit your post to use BBCode code tags around program output and file contents.  Your readers will appreciate it -- and so will the moderators wink

Note that same link is under every message post box on the forums for your convenience.  If 2ManyDog's suggestion does not help, try running it from xterm and see if any error messages are generated.

Hi, sadly I had already tried that but forgot to put it in the first post.

Then you didn't try the suggested solution.  The suggestion was to replace vte3 with vte3-ng from the aur.

EDIT: oops, sorry, I misread the other thread.  I thought it odd that replacing a repo package with an aur one solved a problem - I figured it must be a quirk with some specific locale.  The truth is much simpler.

No, it was the other way around. vte3-ng from the AUR should never replace vte3.

Does somebody maybe have another idea?

This is my output if I try to start terminator via xterm, but I don't really know what to make of it:

Please run the following in xterm:

strace gnome-terminal &> strace.log

Then please post the contents of strace.log if it is too large please post it to a pastebin and post the link.

Is strace.log created?  If so is it empty?

Re: terminal emulators not working after update and package install

It starts and finishes w/ any error, but doesn't seem to spawn a subprocess.

Is there a running process?

ps aux | grep "gnome-terminal"

Does this work?

gnome-terminal -e /bin/bash

What's the output of

loginctl session-status

Nope.
There's no running gnome-terminal, apparently it's not trying to run anything but bash (sanity check: "echo $SHELL" in xterm?) or at least failing w/ bash just as much… you could try running gnome on Xorg and whether gnome-terminal starts there.

Is it normal for Terminator to look for config under /root ?

Hi, so

echo $SHELL

returns

/bin/bash

as I would expect it to. The whole thing is very weird maybe a clean new install would be best as I have never worked with Xorg.
Thanks a lot though.

Re: terminal emulators not working after update and package install

Rather than re-installing, create a new user account and see whether it works then (ie. an issue w/ your user/config)

@TheSgtBilko I suspect he tried to sudo-fix it in that output, /root is not considered in the strace he pasted.
