[Solved] Firefox can't play videos after recent update

Hi

After a recent update Firefox seems to not be able to play some types of videos.

I get the following message at the top of the page "To play video, you may need to install the required video codecs."

I am using Firefox developer edition (89.0b14). and Firefox 88.0.1

When visiting [1]  h264/aac and mpeg4 videos don't play.

I already have ffmpeg installed (along with libmpeg2-0.5.1-7  libvpx-1.10.0-1  x264-3:0.161.r3039.544c61f-1  x265-3.5-1  xvidcore-1.3.7-2)

Thanks

The video's are not drm-ed.

I am getting the same notification even on reddit.

Re: [Solved] Firefox can't play videos after recent update

The mpeg 4 one shows "no video with supported format and mimetype found"  , I think that means the issue may be with the site.

I found an mp4 video at https://www.learningcontainer.com/mp4-s … -download/ , try that one.

The H264/AAC sample works for me, do you have x264 installed ?

I get the same message on this site too.

Re: [Solved] Firefox can't play videos after recent update

Try starting in safe mode firefox --safe-mode to verify if some extension or theme is blocking the media .

If that doesn't help

firefox --ProfileManager

create a fresh profile for firefox and test with that.

I get the same error even with a fresh profile.

Have even tried deleting whole of ~/.mozilla and starting from fresh.

Re: [Solved] Firefox can't play videos after recent update

It turns out that the problem was nvhpc package [1].
I had installed it to try out some cuda programming.
It installs a file in /etc/profile.d that sets up a bunch of environment variables which conflict with the system stuff.

Removing /etc/profile.d/nvhpc.sh fixed the issue.

Re: [Solved] Firefox can't play videos after recent update

https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/ … sh?h=nvhpc is indeed very intrusive and should not be applied system-wide .

Glad you figured it out, please prepend [Solved] to the thread title (edit first post) .

Re: [Solved] Firefox can't play videos after recent update

I'm having the same issue. I'm on Firefox 97.0b9 (Developer Edition, but I tried the release version too and it didn't make a difference). I never installed nvhpc and couldn't find anything else offending in /etc/profile.d that might be causing it (the scripts for programs like gawk and libreoffice seemed very harmless). But everything else OP said applies. I'm on Artix Linux 5.16.3-zen1 (sorry just realized that's not Arch, but the difference is only in init system, everything else is the same). I keep getting error code 102360 on videos and everything on Google seems unhelpful --- this post was the closest I got to my issue. I'm on ffmpeg version n5.0, I believe. Any ideas as to what could be the issue? Help would be much appreciated.

Artix is not supported here.
