system76 Gazelle.  Out of the box fresh arch install had most things working and a functional laptop.  But after some research on the wiki everything is fixed and working perfectly.  It works both undocked and docked though a usb displaylink device with dual monitors.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Made an account just for this.

Running Arch Linux on a Lenovo Ideapad 320-14ISK.
Processor is a 6th gen, 2 Ghz Intel Core i3. I forgot if it has 4 cores or 4 threads.
Everything runs fine, no problems at all. It's been 2 months. Thanks Arch devs.

Linux-Zen doesn't work properly (glitches), Linux makes problems with the realtek Wlan&bluetooth, but only sometimes after reboots.
Linux-LTS works fine.

Edit: Alright the problem also occured with the LTS-kernel (Wifi not working), seems to work now with rtl8723de-dkms-git from AUR, but I wouldn't guarantee it.

Edit again: Didn't have any problems with WLAN since installing the dkms from AUR, so that seems to work.

And one more Edit: After having issues constantly with that shitty RTL-device I told a friend, who has a passion for repairing broken Laptops, about it. He gave me an Intel-WLAN/BT-device which I installed and is 100% Linux-supported. No more issues on that laptop and Wifi5, so I finally get to update fast and have no connection breaks. Hooray!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I'm running Lenovo Legion 5
With a Ryzen 5 &1650ti
I'm running xfce-4 with x11 as my DE.

Works like a charm. But I'm having issues with the brightness, I think it's a xorg issue, but idk atm.

Installed the above Kernel (5.10.71-1-lts) around 09 October 2021 and have had issues with sleep/wake, usb mouse suddenly disconnecting, backlight reverting to dim setting on shutdown/startup (doesn't save the brightness setting).

Stuck with it (even though i had the above issues) until 19 October, then install kernel 5.10.74-1-lts, hoping issues would be fixed. NO cigar.

Same. Same. I even had a hibernate issue with this kernel. System would freeze going in to hibernate.

While system was running the USB mouse would suddenly disconnect and the only way to get it back is to run a script that resets the usb ports. Even that was temperamental. i.e. sometimes it would just hang, sometimes it would complete but mouse remained disconnected.

Now I've restored one of my last known 'working' kernels, which is 5.4.69-1-lts. Yes, it's about an year old. But at least it dosent have any of the above issues. THe only issue it had was that all the LibreOffice suite applications suddenly stopped working. I'd click on 'writer' but it would not open.

That was the reason I updated the Kernel in the first place. Yes, LibreOffice started working, but I then had the mouse, sleep/wake, backlight issues. SO, now that I've gone back to the old kernel the LibreOffice issue is back, and I have to make do with OpenOffice. I say 'make do' because I think openoffice dosen't support one of the file formats I often use (.xlsx).

What a palava. I may wait for the next Kernel update, then try that one, if the issues are still prevalent distro hop to another linux flavour. Just spending too much time fixing system rather than doing work (using it).

I've never used a Ryzen CPU myself, but as I understand it AMD has put a lot of work over the past year or so into getting Ryzen systems stable.  I'd try installing the stock linux package, instead of linux-lts.  In my experience the mainline Linux kernel has been very stable for me on the systems where I use it.  I only have linux-lts on one system, and I've only had it there for less than two weeks.

A couple of Fridays ago I had the day off, and my wife was out of town.  So I took the time to convert my old Debian router to Arch Linux.  The only reason I'm running linux-lts on it is for perceived susceptibility to kernel regressions.  If this host goes down I will be without Internet until it's fixed or replaced.  All my other systems (laptop, a few servers, and a VPS) run the linux kernel, and I haven't had very many problems with it.

About the only problem I can think of is the evdi developers don't keep up with the latest mainline kernel, so I can't use my DisplayLink dock with this laptop.  I've lived without it for so long that it doesn't really bother me.

Not convinced stability issues are mainly related to Ryzen processor.

I've read on forums, arch users spending many hours trying to get back a usable (bootable?) system, for example after an update.

I had the same experience yesterday (perhaps a bit of confirmation bias here because I had negative experience I was only seeing users who had similar negative experience?). Spent pretty much the whole day without a bootable system yesterday.

After trying to install the stock kernel (it gave various errors) and running update (pacman -Syu - which also gave errors), I rebooted just to see if after rebooting I could install the stock kernel.

Kernel (lts) not found error. Cannot boot.

Searched online and happen to see on a Manjaro forum that we can boot with live image then chroot to the root directory/ boot directory and fix.

Tried that. I was still not able to install the stock kernel. Installing the lts version worked. Booting was fine. However, after I login to kde an error came up 'kactivitymanagerd closed unexpectedly'. Spent hours trying to fix that. Tried many solutions, none of them worked.

As a last resort, I installed the xfce desktop and have now managed to at least get into a 'usable' desktop. Saying 'usable' in the loosest possible manner. Some apps like text editing (Kate, geany) apps crash when I open the 'save as' dialog. So I have to resort to 'touch filename.txt' within terminal. Geany filename.txt within terminal again to open the file then do ctrl-s to save within geany text editor.

Networking applet has to be opened via terminal. Still Cannot run 'pacman -Syu' as there are 'duplicate entries'
There are hundreds of them. Closest solution is running a python script from years ago ( which doesn't work - no one has posted a modified working script). Other option is to delete duplicates manually. Eh, no thanks. I have much better things to do.

You'd think that arch would build the whole updating process so that if errors are encountered while updating it would roll-back, but no, user is left with a unusable system that doesn't boot.

To be fair, I think the duplicate entries may be due to me restoring previous kernel via the timeshift backup/restore app. Still, I shouldn't have to go through hundreds of duplicate entries and remove them manually.

Now that I at least have a working desktop environment, I will be backing up files/making notes of all essential apps, then heading out to experience a more stable Linux distro. Pretty sure there are many around.

Edit: I was a Ubuntu user for 5+ years before. Never experienced issues of this magnitude. Goodbye Arch.

This laptop (Lenovo Carbon X1 Gen 8) runs beautifully. No issues with sound, camera, microphone, fingerprint reader, etc., and everything works very well. The only issue I ran into at all was that my NIC would drop packets if it was left in power save mode, and I had to disable it.

Mine was running 'beautifully' too at one point.

I've been using arch for over a year.

Good luck!

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I think this is all user error.  You've probably done something nonstandard, and it cascaded into all of the problems you've been having.  Unfortunately you seem to have done so much you probably couldn't tell us what you did to start all of these problems.  They may not have started right away so you didn't see the root cause.  These don't necessarily look related to kernel issues.  It's strange the linux package doesn't work, but linux-lts does boot, at least kinda.

If I were you I'd backup everything I want to keep on this system, and then try again fresh.  I'd stick to pacman, and not any AUR helpers.  In fact, don't install anything from the AUR, from source, or outside of the main core, community, and extra repositories until you're sure the system is stable.

If it still behaves poorly, I wouldn't rule out some kind of hardware failure.  You can test with another Linux distribution in that case.  Hardware failures can manifest in strange, not always repeatable ways.  In fact, before you try any fresh install of Linux (including Arch), run the proprietary version of memtest86+, and let it run for all four of its passes.  It looks like this system has 12G RAM, so it may take a little less than a day to go through all four passes (my laptop with 32G RAM took a little over two days to test all four passes).  You may have a hard to detect memory issue, and it's causing all of these problems.

This really isn't what this thread is for, so if you'd like to continue, start another topic and see if you can ping me there.

Any good news on (Arch) Linux support for NVidia grafics cards? I haven't bothered with the issue in the last few years.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

Overall, everything functions with a few minor annoyances.

  * Screen rotation stopped working thanks to changes to libinput and gnome. (there is a patch floating to revert this back to old behavior, but not released yet).
  * When switching to and from tablet/tent mode back to normal, touchpad doesn't get enabled. If you fold it and unfold it back, it get enabled properly. No idea why. might be timing issue. Disabling works perfectly.
  * If laptop is suspended in tablet mode,  and switched back to normal mode, the touchpad occasionally won't scroll with one finger and instead requires two fingers to scroll.
  * Everything else function perfectly, including all function buttons.

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I've installed arch on Lg gram 16Z90P-G.AP75D a couple of weeks ago. Works fine also I had some problems with audio. I've solved with sof-firmware package.
I use arch with KDE plasma Wayland session.
My cpu is i7 1165G7 with integrated gpu and 16 gb of ram.
From tonight I installed linux-pf and I try it.

Battery has a long life

Re: Laptops which run Arch

I have a Clevo nh58ac with 48GB RAM, a 1TB NVME SSD, 2 TB NVME SSD, and a 2 TB SATA SSD.  It came with the Ryzen 9 3900 12 core processor running at 3.1GHz (to help keep cooler without sounding like a jet taking off from fan noise) and a Nvidia 1660 Ti.   I occasionally have issue with the graphics card after linux and linux-lts updates, probably because of the weird setup of this custom ordered laptop with a desktop processor in it.  I've decided to ignore the linux, linux-lts, and linux/linux-lts headers in pacman so I don't have to spend so much time hunting down and fixing problems with nouveau and nvidia drivers after updates.  I don't really need the latest possible linux version as much as I need a system that boots without setting nomodeset in grub.

It runs amazingly on linux except for occasional problems due to my tinkering around and messing things up.  To be honest, this laptop runs Windows better than most desktops, but I hate Microsoft generally and Windows especially.  The only issue I have is that I learned ASP business application development, Tableau, and SQL server on Windows and can't seem to get these kinds of things set up on Linux to work as easily as they do in Windows.  I had a dual boot system going but Windows stopped booting.  If I can figure out a way to get Linux set up to manage as well as visual studio, tableau, and a good SQL solution I won't miss Windows at all.

I've been experimenting and plan to back up all of my important personal work so I can reformat and start clean with just linux.  I'm currently using Kernel 5.10.98-1-lts and Xfce.  I have used Plasma but Xfce does things just as well and smoother.  Overall I'm happy with things, the laptop is capable and still has room for storage, ram, and even CPU upgrades in the future.  Once I figure out how to set it up for my work in information systems it will be my main workstation for many years to come.

I drew the short straw and got a model with a Realtek RTL8852AE wireless card so I'm running the 5.16 RC kernel to get it supported natively. Everything works though, even suspend & resume (once the "Linux" sleep mode is selected in the firmware options), which is nice.

Macbook Air 6,2 (Mid-2013 to early 2014)

The installation medium does not support the Broadcom BCM 4360 WiFi adapter. Using an alternative network device (mobile phone / usb tethering) I had to install "broadcom-wl-dkms" from AUR and blacklist all other Broadcom network adapter modules.

Nearly everything else works out of the box: Bluetooth (Magic Mouse), touchpad, backlights and function keys. The camera needs "facetimehd-firmware" and "bcwc-pcie-git" from AUR and works too.

The "<>" and "^°" keys are swapped. Surprisingly I had to turn the solution from the Wiki on its head: The default value for "iso_layout" is "-1" and must be set to "1".

It's significantly faster than the parallel installed macOS Big Sur in nearly every way (Booting, being ready, starting apps).

Frame.work Laptop

Had to add Intel Linux Driver for the WiFi adapter, no problems...

Followed the Arch Linux Framework wiki to take care of some issues; however, I prefer NOT changing the mem_sleep variant from s2idle to deep. Deep works great for me. Also, I don't see ANY ACPI issues on 5.12+ kernel.

New issue, 5.16.3 kernel causes screen glitches/screen tearing when mouse pointer touches the left hand side of the screen. This is currently 'fixed' by changing to linux-lts, or any 5.15 kernel and holding the upgrade thru pacman... I've opted to install linux.lts alongside linux, and run the lts until linux is fixed... there is open issues on both GNOME and linux kernel projects.

Arch Linux is currently the best Linux experience that I've found for the Frame.work laptop - and I'm a fairly happy bunny.
