Hello All:
I am a fairly experienced Linux user and just acquired an older HP Z400 Workstation. Installed Arch (base system plus some other things. This system came with an Nvidia Quadro NVS 295 or G98. Tried to install current Nvidia drivers both Free and Propitary and legacy drivers from the AUR, but nothing works, we boot fine until DM loads (X). This system booted fine with KDE under Wayland with no video driver specified… also fails there with any drivers for GPU at all. Xorg no go under ANY circumstances. I have reinstalled Arch 5x now! Went back into ISO and chrooted into my install and removed lighten after disabling it. This is BIOS system so EUFI is not an option even though I am using a modern SSD and again no issues booting to CLI. Need to get something running on this box tried XFCE and KDE and really wanted to try something like I3 but the live cd I have (Manjaro) also has problems.
Hope someone can help!!
Thanks,
Michael

Please describe what's actually going wrong and post logs and / or error messages.
Also please edit your first post to give this thread a meaningful title.

Which drivers from the AUR did you try? you should be using the 340 version.
Have you tried enabling early KMS as you may be hitting a common race condition?

@slitherky
Not sure about early KMS or how to set it up. The legacy drivers for 340 doesn’t allow the proper resolution for my monitor which is 1920x1080. KDE running Wayland supported the resolution.
@trilby what logs would you like to see if I try to boot running X the system is rendered unusable and you have to force a reboot by holding the power button and then powering back up.
Thanks guys.

You just asked two follow up questions for which information was already provided in links. Follow the links. And - again - update the title to be something remotely meaningful.
FWIW, when X does not start are you sure the system is unusable? Have you tried Ctrl+Alt+F2 or Ctrl+Alt+F3 to get to another tty?

Tribute: yes, tried to switch in all cases just keeps showing a single line and locks the machine. It is going to be impossible to post the logs because there is no access to the browser on the Z400. Perhaps a IRC channel? Thanks for the help,

This. You have been asked twice now.

It's only impossible until you read the links provided which show you exactly how to post logs without a GUI.

Ok, well taking advice of @slithery, compiled the Nvidia 340 driver and sure enough X does come up. I am in my system writing this. I am STILL getting the same issue with the fact that I can not get my system to set the display to 1280x1024 which is my monitor's resolution, so still need to figure out how to get this accomplished since my prior DE (desktop) handled it... I know the GPU can do it. Just this driver is apparently not supporting the resolution. Help is always welcome and thanks to all for the help.
