The problem is that after logging in, the session stays back with a mouse pointer and nothing happens for several minutes, then it drops back to the login screen.

I cleared my home to ensure it wasnt caused by some setting in my homedir, saved session, etc. This didn't help.
I looked over the packages that got updated and rolled back the following packages:
extra/boost 1.78.0-2 1.78.0-3 0.06 MiB
extra/boost-libs 1.78.0-2 1.78.0-3 0.01 MiB
core/gssproxy 0.9.1-1 0.9.1-2 0.00 MiB
core/krb5 1.19.3-1 1.19.3-3 -0.07 MiB
extra/liblouis 3.21.0-1 3.22.0-1 0.10 MiB 2.16 MiB
core/libnftnl 1.2.1-1 1.2.2-1 0.00 MiB
core/libverto 0.3.2-4 0.07 MiB
extra/libx11 1.8-1 1.8.1-2 0.00 MiB 2.05 MiB
core/linux 5.18.1.arch1-1 5.18.2.arch1-1 -0.41 MiB
I tried the kernel first, but that didn't resolve so then I did the others and removed the new gssproxy dependency libverto.
Maybe not all of these are causing the issue but it helped me for now. its not a real solution of course.

If those would have been posted in pacman upgrade issues where I looked and searched, I would have actually found those
