Browser based on Chromium don't let laptop screen turn off while idle

HI,

Processor : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz
Kernel : 5.18.0 (issue persist at any kernel)
WM :     i3wm
Google chrome: 102.0.5005.61
Dispay server: XOrg
Compositor: picom (vgit-7e568)
tlp : 1.5.0-5

Any browser based on chromium (102.0.5005.61) doesn't let laptop screen to turn off while there is any video on others tab. Issue persist even when video is paused or that tab is being closed. This issue is not reproducible while using non chromium based browser i.e. Firefox, Opera.  If google chrome or brave or even chromium is opened without loading any video tab, issue is not reproducible

Steps to reproducible :

Set dpms standby, suspend, off threshold value to 10 each (this will reduce testing time)

xset dpms 10 10 10

If dpms is not enabled, enable it:

xset +dpms

1. Open Google chrome or any chromium(102.0.5005.61) based browser , load youtube video on a tab.
2. Pause the video and stay on the same tab or move to other tab
3. wait to reach dpms value threshold
4. Voilla you can see screen is not turning off

1. Close the youtube tab explained before
2. Wait again for dpms timeout
3. Voilla still screen is not turning off

Actual result :

Laptop screen is not turning off

Expected Behaviour :

Screen should be turned off while laptop is idle for the threshold value of dpms, even  when video is paused.

Other Information :

Same report was opened https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewforum.php?id=230068 but with that It can't be solved.

On the same report V1del posted below :

V1del wrote:

Do you have a chrome/chromium session with a video (or for that matter a flash ad tongue ) running? Chromium will send monitor inhibition events if that is the case and powerdevil will honor these.

But I have installed tlp. And if issue is not reproducible with other browser then with powerdevil is not the solution I belive.

Please let me know whether if any information is still missing to solve the issue. Thank you.

Re: Browser based on Chromium don't let laptop screen turn off while idle

I have this same issue on Xfce.

The screen dimming on inactivity still works. So the power manager recognizes the computer is in an idle state. It is just the switching off that is somehow inhibited.

I've found it is reproducible with Brave Browser being that it's already based on Chromium 102, however the issue doesn't occur with Vivaldi which is still based on Chromium 100. Also Firefox doesn't have this problem.

I've tried to run xfce4-power-manager with debugging yet received no errors. Nothing seems to be inhibiting the power manager at the time of the problem. Also no relevant errors when running chromium in a terminal.

I've found this issue to not affect GNOME or KDE.

Yeah any browsrer based on chromium 102.0.5005.61 issue can be reproducible. Initially I thought the it is only reproducible with google chrome, until i found a bugreport#74856 already going on for chromium.

Re: Browser based on Chromium don't let laptop screen turn off while idle

I just noticed this issue only occurs if you let the video in the browser play audio. If you mute YouTube then restart your browser so the video starts muted, then the screen is still able to blank. I noticed this when I did the hover preview on YouTube and the issue didn't occur.

However, I tried to just play audio on a site without video and the issue also didn't occur.

Same issue with brave-bin (1:1.39.122-1) from AUR. Might exist a Chromium parameter to solve this behavior.

Re: Browser based on Chromium don't let laptop screen turn off while idle

It has been fixed please see https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/74856#comment209592 and https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/is … 1329573#c5

need to build from source or ask that package maintainer to backport it.
