Re: slow internet connection

* How do you test? Are you using a tool like speedtest-cli?
* Did you test on another network? How did it compare to your network?
* Did you try with different kernels? Any change here?
* Anything suspicious in dmesg / journal logs?

* Good formatted problem description will cause good and quick solution smile

Re: slow internet connection

speedtest-cli and ookla site

* Did you test on another network?
with my phone in hotspot wifi the speed is reduced at (17Mbit/s than 60Mbit/s)

How did it compare to your network?
i have installed the same ARCHLINUX on a pc desktop and the speed is ok

* Did you try with different kernels? no

Any change here? i don't understand the question

* Anything suspicious in dmesg / journal logs?
no suspicious msg in dmseg / journal logs

Re: slow internet connection

i don't understand the question

"Do the other kernels (eg lts) yield better results?"

but cable and wireless connection don't go over 10Mbit/s
wireless interface is Broadcom bcm4312
wired interface is RTL 8169

Focus on the rj45 connection first (the one with a cable) - https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Broadcom_wireless is an issue in and by itself.
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Re: slow internet connection

1. I would also test on a stable network (read non-cellular) just to see we can deduct anything.
2. So better try with another kernels since you report that both devices (wired and wireless) behaving the same.
3. Regarding the wired connection, did you see this and this?

Re: slow internet connection

nb. that the OP has indicated an "RTL 8169" chip - *iff* that's correct, r8168 might not be able to drive the chip at all.
(But many are actually RTL 8168 and just supported by r8169)

Re: slow internet connection

nothing, I've tried everything, linux-zen, linux-lts, rtl8168, broadcom-wl, but the connection never exceeds 10Mbit/s. Both wired and wireless

journalctl -b

speedtest wired connection

Re: slow internet connection

apr 25 08:20:23 pcsirio kernel: r8169 0000:03:00.0 eth0: RTL8168c/8111c, 00:26:9e:7e:99:15, XID 3c4, IRQ 32

You actally do have an r8168 chip, not an "RTL 8169" one => feel free to test the r8168 module.

Make sure to rfkill the wifi connection while there's

apr 25 08:20:53 pcsirio NetworkManager[291]: <info> [1714026053.0103] policy: set 'Connessione via cavo 1' (enp3s0) as default for IPv4 routing and DNS

you're constantly connected via wifi and "Vodafoneopen2" sounds a lot like it might be a public AP that's pot. subject to some quota.

dmesg | grep r8168 output that nic r8168 is link up and not speed information is present

How i can force to 1000 Mbit/s ?

Re: slow internet connection

You can change running speed by executing:

ethtool -s devname [speed N]

Check here for further information how to persist this (+there's additional info regarding r8168).

*Remember that the port you are connected to need to support the hardened speed as well.

Re: slow internet connection

Also make sure the cable is not broken (use a preferably short known-good cable directly to your router without using any of the wires that may be in your walls) and if your router has speed settings for its ports. (Those should mostly only toggle between 1G / 100M, though)

It is probably also possible to keep autonegotiation=on and set "Advertise=" to the accepted speeds instead of forcing a specific speed without autonegotiation, otherwise you might get half-duplex instead of full duplex.

Re: slow internet connection

* Check the output of command: ethtool <dev>. What speeds are advertised by the router's switch? Paste the output here.
* Follow the instructions given on r8168 and report whether there was any change.
* Replace the port on the router.
* Replace the cable.

Re: slow internet connection

Link partner advertised link modes: 10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full

It's the switch (your router), not the local device - maybe the cable.
Is that some modemrouterswitch combo issued by your ISP? Which model?

Do you connect the same switch as w/ your phone or pc desktop?
If we cannot improve the rj45 speed we need to focus on the wifi.

Re: slow internet connection

I don't think it's the cable, it's cat5e. But I'll try another one anyway. The router was provided by my ISP.
My pc desktop is connected to the same router and there are no problems.

Re: slow internet connection

Have you tried switching the ports at the router?
Make sure the cable isn't loose on either end, sometimes the latch protection collides with the case and you cannot fully inject the plug.

Re: slow internet connection

So, I tried another cat5e cable and now the connection went up to 100Mbit/s. I don't understand how this is possible. However, it's better this way. But it is always lower than the 200Mbit/s of my subscription.

Re: slow internet connection

Switching from 100MBit/s to 1000MBit/s may be a setting in your router. Some older Fritz!Box variants limit the LAN ports to 100 MBit/s by default "Green Mode" and you have to enable the higher power 1GBit/s. At least in germany vodafone mostly offers a (sometimes rebranded) fritzbox.
https://en.avm.de/service/knowledge-bas … 00-Mbit-s/

As for wireless, if you connect your phone to the wifi and run a speedtest, then it is fast?

Re: slow internet connection

My router/modem has some problems with the LAN interface, because if I connect to LAN 1 the speed is 100Mbit/s, while the connection to the other ports is 10Mbit/s. It's not a cable problem. Or it is an incompatibility with the laptop's network card.

If I connect the phone the speed is 130Mbit/s.

Re: slow internet connection

And what, exactly, is your router/modem (model, version) and how is it configured?

Re: slow internet connection

The router/modem was provided to me by the VODAFONE ISP. However I purchased a TP-LINK ARCHER C88 router. As soon as I install it in lan/wan cascade, I will make a new post to find out if everything is fine.

Re: slow internet connection

If you're ultimately connecting the new router through a 10/100 Mbit link w/ the ISP router and everything now has to go through that *combined* bottleneck, things will rather get worse.
You're not getting around sorting out the issues w/ your vodafuck router.

Vodafone ships several routers. Some look like an AVM Fritz!Box because they are but others (square gray box) aren't.
=> Which model *exactly* (google images of vodafone routers and link one that matches, but ideally post the model/version which can be found in the routers web interface)
