NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

Updated my system earlier this morning and discovered some weird behaviour on Gnome

My system would recognise that the second display existed and was plugged in, but the moment the NVidia driver loaded it would cause one of the displays to go completely black

However, Gnome was still pretending that the second display is active and try to display stuff in it (despite the fact that it was completely black and not active). Nvidia settings also seems to show the display as active, even though it was black

I was able to fix this by downgrading to 550.90.07 drivers, as well as switching to the DKMS drivers.

For good measure, I also set nvidia_drm.modeset=1 in my kernel settings via /etc/default/grub

This seemed to restore everything back to normal functionality.

I am not completely certain on what caused this, since I am not using Wayland. I'm using Gnome on X11, and all the current issues I've seen here use Wayland. For example: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=295937

My intuition was that my issue was caused by the fact that my system is a little oder and I still use DVI to HDMI on one of my displays: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/b … een/298311

I'm putting this post here in case it helps anyone else experiencing the same problem

Same for me (X11+Plasma).

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

I am having the same issue on my triple Mointore Setup (X11 + bspwm)
DVI-D-0 only to be specific.
tty works on boot, but once nvidia + X11 is started. My main monitore stops working even after Xorg is killed.
Everything seems to be able to recognize them, but it is still black.

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

DVI is on the record to be broken in 555, other connector methods seem to work fine: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=297296

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

So the fix that worked for me was downgrading to nvidia-dkms 550
and using linux-lts with linux-lts-headers

sudo pacman -Rns nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-settings
sudo downgrade nvidia-dkms
sudo downgrade nvidia-utils
sudo downgrade nvidia-settings

downgraded nvidia stuff to 550 and installed linux and headers for 6.6, still doesn't work. any other ideas?

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

That should and does work for the majority of people, but "doesn't work" is not an error message. What exactly did you downgrade how? What output do you get from

dkms status
pacman -Qs 'kernel|nvidia'

i tried with arandr aswell, it detects the monitor but it wont display anything. I've checked cables aswell its working fine with my windows machine and a ubuntu machine.

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
There's a deactivated output on HDMI-0 but it defaults to XGA, which is odd.
Does

xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto

do anything?

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

Does anyone know if there's a time frame on when the next version of the driver will be released? I realise there's no guarantee that the next one will fix this bug, but I'm really hoping so as my whole system is frozen on older packages until this gets fixed...

Yes it is - I'm on an immutable system that, unfortunately, can't use dkms packages. https://github.com/cleanroom-team/cleanroom if you're interested.

I tried both nvidia-open-beta-dkms and nvidia-beta-dkms (both 560.28.03-1) and my display connected via DVI is still not displaying anything here's my xorg log (running nvidia-open)

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

The remark was meant for phunni, b/c nvida-open avoids at least the apparent 55yxx memory corruption issues of the binary driver and https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … idia-open/ is in the repos..

Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

generally get rid of that file, but the issue at hand might be in the DDX driver (ie nvidia-utils, not the kernel module) and then nvidaz-open can't help you either sad

Is nvidia-open an option?

Probably, although I'm not sure it supports my old card - GTX 1070

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

That should be a Turing chip - which are supported by nvidia-open.

NVIDIA is apparently working on it "Thank you everyone for sharing the details, I am able to replicate issue locally which will help us to debug it now. Shall update further once I have feedback from engineering team." this message is from like a day ago https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/b … /298311/21

Re: NVidia 555 Display Issues with Dual Monitor on Gnome

Does anyone know how long these things can usually be expected to take? I'm trying to decide if I should just buy a new GPU - an AMD one this time. I can't really afford it and would have to go from an old, but (in it's day) high end to a relatively budget one. That said, I imagine most modern budget ones would outperform my dinosaur anyway.

If it's likely to be a question of weeks, then I'll probably just hang on, but waiting months would be very frustrating...

The 560 drivers should be out soon, they're in their second beta. No idea if they've fixed this issue, though.
