I tried again and when I run startx I get an error in Xorg.log:

I have ATI Radeon 9000 and Mesa drivers. With kernel 2.6.19 everything is okay.

Thanks in advance.

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

Same symptoms at my end (and I use the xf86-video-ati Radeon driver). Downgrading xorg-server from 1.2.0-1 and related packages didn't seem to help- only downgrading kernel26 2.6.20-1 to 2.6.19.2-1. Rather than open a new bug report I've added a note to a recent bug report that seems quite related (different symptoms, but related to the same mix of xorg-server 1.2.0, ATI video card and kernel26 2.6.20-1: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/6366
and the associated thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=29661

cheers

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

I tried to install kernel 2.6.20 from testing too. Everything looks okay just X server doesn't start. I am using nvidia, I don't know what to do with disable vesa first in boot manager video=vesa:off - load the correct framebuffer module from MODULES= in rc.conf  ??? an example would have been nice. neutral
I went back to 2.6.19.2-1 and the nvidia logo turned up again, x-server started. I did try the nvidia drivers in testing, too when I installed kernel 2.6.20.

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

I have a radeon 9550, when using the new kernel from testing the X server does start but it takes a long time (about 20 seconds). Once started it all seems fine.

As with others downgrading to 2.6.19 cures the slow start

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

I just thought I would add:

I have been using this kernel and did not experience any issues.

[XXXXX@XXXX~]$ uname -a
Linux XXXX 2.6.20-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue Feb 6 10:39:12 CET 2007 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.73GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
[XXXXX@XX ~]$

Gateway 8510GZ
ATI X700
Open Source Drivers (i.e. ati/radeon driver installed not fglrx)

Hope this helps.

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

looks like that problem is with ATI Radeon 9000 PRO with OpenSource drivers (Mesa not fglrx) if you read above posts.

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

I believe Mesa is your graphics library. ati and radeon are the open source graphic card drivers and fglrx is the closed source proprietary driver for the AMD(ATI) graphic card set.

Next I noticed an additional poster placed that this effect was occurring with their systems with a slightly different card i.e. a 9800.

Then recognizing that you had this issue and wanted it fixed, I posted this hoping that since I am using the same library, kernel, and drivers but only have a different card a developer may read this and then be able to recognize the difference between the two cards; thus maybe adding some additional information to solve the problem quicker.

If there is any other information that I can send to help or narrow the problem down in regards to my systems setup compared to others, just let me know and I will look it up if I know how.

running a livecd is like running the kernel without your radion driver installed, you can do the same in arch, change the driver in xorg.conf to vesa.
No, I am looking forward to get this problem with the graphic driver solved. And this mean what the fu.. does this written just below the kernel news mean ;;;in boot manager video=vesa:off - load the correct framebuffer module from MODULES= in rc.conf
load the correct framebuffer???

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

this framebuffer info means:
if you want to use the kernel framebuffer driver for your card, enable it like i posted it.
There are issues with binary modules from nvidia and ati that dissallow the use of those modules by default. So the fb modules are disabled by default by udev-105-3 package.

Is on your machines any fb module loaded?
lsmod | grep fb
if yes this could explain the xorg trouble.

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

lsmod | grep fb showed nothing, meaning that no fb modules are loaded.
I then tried to install kernel  2.6.20 again and then I was told to use 96xx nvidia because I have a geforce 4200ti on this computer. X-server didn't work anyway, then back to old kernel, but then I get this.

: kernel26-2.6.20-1: local version is newer.  Upgrade anyway? [Y/n] Y
Targets: kernel26-2.6.19.2-1
Total Package Size:   18.8 MB

Proceed with upgrade? [Y/n] Y
checking package integrity... done.
loading package data... done.
checking for file conflicts...
error: the following file conflicts were found:

So, rm it all and then back to 2.6.19

reg:
Ok back on default kernel,
just a ps..
If I just install the new kernel and reboot the first thing I see on the screen closing down is done done, but the Altaration Monitor Fail
I don't know if that could be any help?

SLAX has option xconf and in xog.conf I hahave/had ATI ards. xconf find everything: monitor and ATI cards and xorg.conf on SLAX is almost same as on Arch. GLXINFO shows same as on Arch for example (ARI RAdeon 9000 Pro, chip 250....).
Download and try...

Re: kernel from testing and x-server

I have vga=795
But I have tried video=vesa:off ..but what am I going to write in rc.conf modules(nvidia???)

And I wonder why there is no kernel-headers for kernel 2.6.20-x, and last are there anything else, I have to get, besides kernel and nvidia nvidia-utils?

The two cards I have on my computers, found on the nvidia Supported Products List
GeForce4 Ti 4200     0x0253
GeForce 7600 GT     0x0391

If I'm not using the frame buffers vga=795 the boot is going to be damn ugly!! How am I going to replace that?

REG: I've got it I'm up and running using the nvidia drivers.
