Installed base 0.8b2 on sata hdd. After install I've remooved old pata drive. This cause changing sata drive name from /dev/sdb to /dev/sda. (sis chipset)

In mkinitcpio.conf there are examples with ide, but images are made with pata.

I don't know if this problem is mentioned already, I don't have the time to read the whole thread...
But I had problems with ftp installation and a pc with 256mb memory, it crashes. I seems the downloaded packages are hold somewhere in memory which causes an out-of-memory exception. I think a better solution would be to put these packages in the tmp directory of the already mounted install drive at that point, it should keep a lot of extra memory available.

@mouse256: I thought the packages were downloaded into the normal cache in /mnt/var during installation. This should allow them to be kept for later use.

installed the bata2 on my amd 64 3000+ on s-ata hd divices with s-ata dvd-device, (first time without any problems connected to these, thats why im mentioning )

i installed the beta2 on my thinkpad t60 and it worked without any problems. the only thing i noticed, was that while installing the packages i got some ouput from some packages which was printed and therefore screwed up the alignment a bit. this is more like a cosmetic issue. can't remember which package(s) caused that.

one suggestion though: when setting the mount points for the file system, the configured partitions are removed from the list. but what about when you accidently chose a wrong partition and want to change that?
my suggestions: don't remove configured partitions, but add something like [configured] to the partitions name. maybe in another color to make it obvious. this way you can see which partitions are already configured, but you could still select them, if you want to.

Installed Voodoo 0.8 on a Dell D820 and a Medion md8800, both without any problems.
Using ext2 as boot, XFS as / and ext3 as /home on both machines, ntfs-3g for accessing windows partitions, no problems, no kernel panics ;-)

Futhermore; on the Dell the ipw9345 works very well, and the fonts look very good (1680x1050). On the desktop (1280x1024) things look allright, but horrible in Firefox (not an Voodoo related problem i guess).

Anyway: to me this looks solid, cheers to the devs.

Rieger, this sounds interesting.

I do have a Dell Inspiron 9400 and planned to install Arch on that laptop.
Till now I only did on a normal PC ('old Arch 0.7x)

But, I had some thoughts about finding out installation of my NVIDIA, ipw3945, soundcard etc... again.

How did you setup your ipw3945, and what are your recommendations?

I defenately will try to install Arch, also without help, but it is welcome ofcourse

ipw3945 installing is "pacman -S ipw3945".
add ipw3945d to rc.conf and you're done.
I've got an eth2 device which is the wireless one.
Only using I cannot get network profiles to work, but a manual connect is not that big a problem for me.

For sound: just follow the ALSA setup from the Archwiki. I only have problems with the mic (for Skype), but i'll look into that later. (weird characters when looking at alsamixer from a console). Mp3's, video etc works fine however.

For nvidia: I did the base install, then xorg, then installed hwd, to autogenerate xorg.conf. Adjust the settings for resolution (just add 1680x1050 to your favourite colordepth) and you're done.
Then pacman nvidia, change "vesa" to "nvidia" in xorg.xonf and uncomment the dri thingy in the end. startx should com up with the nvidia splash.
Oh, 1680x1050 resolution worked only after installing nvidia.

Hi there,
one issue just for record.
I tried to install arch from CD onto single partition (/dev/sda2 was / and there was no sepparate /boot partition, plus swap).
After install, boot went nicely through, till it said EXT3 fs mounting root read only,
which was followed by sh: root=/dev/sda2 can not be found or similar message. Notice, it was right after sda2 was mounted with correct filesystem.
Only fix I could figure out was to reinstall and create some separate boot partttion.

Successfuly installed on sata drive, msi k9vgm-v motherboard, dualcore amd3600+.
When formatting the partitions with xfs I could not install packages, but changing to ext2 it worked just fine.
When installing with ext3, I get segmentation fault when installing the kernel and the system restarts.
I am happy for this release, I needed a distribution with kernel 2.6.19+ to support the vt8237a chipset in my motherboard. Thanks a lot!

I got ext3 working fine too. It was probably due to me not being familiar with the archlinux installer, or incorrect bios-settings!

installed 32 bit on my 64 amd yesterday with the 0.8 beta ftp iso - all went well but it could not find my ide dvd-burner. It made it into a scsi device sr0. Had to install the gimmick 0.7.2 and upgrade that way.

But it made a nice grub with two images and it added the keyboard layouts to rc.conf.

Okay, today was THE day.

Last week I tried to install Arch on my Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop without success...
My own fault because I did not write things down, did not read the Wiki...

After some printing, some reading and some searching, this evening I tried it again.
And now I am typing from my fresh Arch install; Base, a small X setup and Opera at the moment.

Wow, bloody fast!!

At this moment updating with pacman, and tomorrow I will try to install the rest.

Seems very promising.

Pentium 640, 1G memory, Asus P5P800 (i865), Nvidia Geforce 6600 graphics card, two ATA harddrives, DVD-ROM and DVD burner, no dualboot, dualview

Hi people!

I'm trying to install 0.8 b2 on a Dell latitute (p3 500, 512 ram) but all i get is a kernel panic.

I have opened this topic in the Instalation forum asking for help but as this is for feedback i wanted to let you know here too.

I have also installed archlinux on a desktop pII 400 with no problems but for that i used the 0.72 release (that was before i found this thread and the 0.8 isos) and its working flawlessly.

Outstanding distro!

installed arch 0.8b2 on my acer aspire 5672wmli and everything went great, not a single problem here. I had problems later when the wxGTK 2.8 update killed codeblocks so I had to downgrade to 2.6 but aside from that best distro evar

- switched from busybox to archboot usage
- Updated packages (including linux 2.6.20.4)

- Installation on PATA and IDE possible (PATA is default now)

done to avoid random swapping of multiple network interfaces

Installed from 0.8 yesterday ; no problems, went like clockwork. Criticisms ...... errr ...... well the confirmation before formatting partitions screen is a little difficult to read

Does some nice things 0.7.2 didn't, like putting my r8169 module into /etc/rc.conf automatically.

As regards documentation, if you can install 0.7.2, you can install this ; it is (on the surface) a very similar process. The main difference I recall is when you go into Configure System you are asked a barrage of questions (defaults all okay) before you can edit the config files.

Thanks guys ; this distro is brilliant. As an Archer (sic?) of about a week I keep thinking there has to be a downside to it - just haven't found one yet Doesn't have the downsides of gentoo (36 hour install) or ubuntu (36 hours to do anything ;-) )

Ah, I have thought of a problem. It doesn't automagically load the cx88-dvb module that my NOVA DVB-T card requires. I have to put it in /etc/rc.conf myself (exhausting work ....)
