Speed up your internet

This is an odd hack I stumbled upon while talking to im_ka on irc.  As most people know, on irc you can run a /whois command and next to your name it gives you information specific to your connection (I don't know the actual name of this information).  But what I found was that putting that into your /etc/hosts speeds up your internet for myself, and others who tested this.  On irc the command and output looks like this:

/whois lavapunk
lavapunk [~lavapunk@c-24-21-127-66.client.comcast.net]
-!- ircname : Unknown
-!- channels : #archlinux

And so I put "lavapunk@c-24-21-127-66.client.comcast.net" into my /etc/hosts so that it now looks like this:

#<ip-address> <hostname.domain.org> <hostname>
127.0.0.1 lavapunk@c-24-21-127-66.client.comcast.net localhost

While it sounds odd this really seems to speed up your internet... feedback would be appreciated.

Re: Speed up your internet

Well yes, but if you have a static ip it works great... or if you don't mind changing it back the day it stops working smile
For me, comcast hardly ever (if ever) changes my ip so it will likely work like a charm.  But I havn't tested it over a prolonged period.
