i haven't heard anything from the arch devs about how they want to do kde4. a lot of people are recommending NOT using it as a replacement for kde3 yet. if the arch devs decide not to put it in official repos i'll build it sooner or later.
Offline
I already built 4.0.0. It is true that it cannot yet fully replace the old KDE3 experience; there are regressions in regard to functionality (kdepim and kdedev, e.g., are missing and you cannot change the panel layout, etc.). But if someone is curious enough and wants to use it, I really see no reason not to do so. I find that it has improved drastically during the last week. Also, you can always use KDE3 programs within KDE4. It would be great if the Arch devs could offer a version that installs parallel to KDE3. This is, after all, intentionally made possible by the KDE team.
I don't have enough bandwidth to upload at the moment since I am traveling. But I could upload packages in a week or so. However, until then we might prefer to use the current branches/KDE/4.0/ since lots of fixes that are already going into the 4.1 trunk are being backported. I believe 4.0.1 will come really soon.

I really would like to use kde4 parallel to kde3. So I could write my own plasmoids and so on! Until now I did not install kde4 on arch as I don't want to use the testing repo and it seems to have conflicts with the kdemod packages.
It really would be no problem to have a parallel kde4 because it can specified to use even its own home e.g. .kde4.
So I hope there will be soon a prallel kde4mod

You can indeed change the panel layout, just not location or size of panel. Just drag plasmoides from the plasma chooser (whatever it's called) into the panel.

Take a look here: http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=406
4.0 packages will be available shortly...
want a modular and tweaked KDE for arch? try kdemod

Thanks funkyou
I already knew about that. It's only for 686 (until now) and you have to activate testing repositories. AFAIK it also removes qt-enhanced... so the question is, if it is really possible to install it parallel to kde3?

No. Just read the forum post i linked above...

Works fine here

Good to hear! So I just have to wait until the x86_64 packages are out
I think I will try to build it with the PKGBUILDs

I have compiled KDE 4.0 packages for x86_64.
They are in the repository:
[tanis]
Server = http://jakub.markconstable.com/x86_64
Only kdepim4 is not in 4.0 version - it wasn't released as a 4.0 and 3.97 doesn't compile with the rest of packages in 4.0 versions. So I used latest svn available. Packages are without debugging information, and libraries are stripped.
There is new package kdebindings4, which wasn't present before.
This time (again) packages need dependencies from testing repository.
(If anybody is interested, the same repository includes also firefox3 beta2 package, which can be installed next to firefox2)

That's great, Tanis!
If someone is curious what will happen to KDE4 in Arch, there is a discussion going on here: http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-dev … 04120.html
So the KDE4 packages will probably go to testing or into a private repo until 4.1. Of course there are the repos from this thread (tanis, KDEmod, and whatever else will come up).
P.S. If someone wants to build him/herself (i.e. not for a 4.0.0. repo), I would recommend to use the 4.0. branch (branches/KDE/4.0/) instead of the 4.0.0. tagged version (tags/KDE/4.0.0), because that is where the bugfix backports for 4.0.1. go. So effectively, it will be a 4.0 with some fixes but no new features.

Hi. I can't seem to get kdm working. Kdm starts up fine, but it has loads of users which don't exist. When I try to login as me, it says something like "Please check the error log or contact your system administrator." My log is:
********************************************************************************
Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages
(i.e., not from libraries and external programs/scripts it uses) go to the
daemon.* syslog facility; check your syslog configuration to find out to which
file(s) it is logged. PAM logs messages related to authentication to authpriv.*.

Also how do I get kdesu? I don't like using sudo becuase it has a lot of errors with permissions, and stops me from logging in because .ICEauthority is owned by root for some reason.

PKGBUILDS for KDE4 are here: http://jakub.markconstable.com/kde4pkgbuilds.tar.gz
I used tanis' pkbuilds and built kde4 for i686 32bit. Although i don't have a fast internet connection to share. Does anyone want to host it?

Does anyone have koffice2 working on x86_64? I tried installing Tardo's packages, but I get an error about libkdeprint.so.5. I'll try out the koffice-svn package that's in AUR and if that doesn't work try to roll my own, but if someone else has an easier way, I'd rather not reinvent the wheel...

if you're still reluctant to install KDE4, I'm building the packages as I type this. My internet will be hooked up tomorrow, and I'll boot up my x64 box so everyone can enjoy KDE4. Give me till the end of the week though, it takes time to ensure the packages are done right.
Offline
Sure, I don't mind waiting. Means less hassle. Thanks!

Thanks By the way, is there a difference between KDE 4.0 and 4.0.0? Also will you be building the language packs? I don't mind using american english for now but I don't really like seeing "Colors" instead of "Colours"...

I can write a pkgbuild that will build it for you, but I have no intention of building it myself.

Thanks. I don't mind building it myself. Could you provide a PKGBUILD. Oh and if you don't know already I would like the GB locale.
