For those interested in minimalist window managers...

I'm going to try out Screen because of this article. I think I'll stick with ion over ratpoison though... same idea, but more intelligent.

Here's the article:

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

screen looks a bit hardcore for me...
I just made a PKGBUILD for wmi the other day and I've been playing around with it - it's quite nice. "The VIM of window managers" ...!

I think I stick with ion for a while now.  big_smile It will take me a few years to learn it.
Nice article though.

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

I'd like the PKGBUILD for wmi. It looks like it might be as good as ion, though I really can't think of anything about ion that I don't like that needs changing...

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

I'm using screen and I like it a lot. It's especially good for remote administration (one ssh connection, automatic and manual detach/attach mode, easy copy/paste with keyboard, automatic start of your favourite programs, etc. etc. - so much power in this app). I also like the concept of ion/wmi/ratpoison and similar wms - finally someone that does not blindly copy windows/macos functionality.
This should also interest those of you who remember good old dos/borland tools days :-) http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/twin/, http://themes.freshmeat.net/projects/twin/, http://gnuweb.binarycompass.org/directo … /twin.html)

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

luckily for me wmi has no runtime dependencies so the pkgbuild is quite unsophisticated. That's the way I like it...:)

pkgname=wmi
pkgver=8
pkrel=1
pkgdesc="window manager for x11"
url="http://wmi.berlios.de/wmi/index.html"
depends=()
source=(http://download.berlios.de/wmi/$pkgname-$pkgver.tar.gz)
md5sums=('6d21d1a2c69bffc4fd90e2251a36e1d2')

build() {
 cd $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver
 ./configure --prefix=/usr
 make || return 1
 make prefix=$startdir/pkg/usr install
}

I've used screen a bit, but after I read that article it seems even more interesting! Now i don't need VNC all the time! W00t!  big_smile

yes, sorry - I just did it for myself really, but Dusty said he'd like to check it out...
I never really bother with the depends if I just use them myself - it's a good habit to get into tho.:)

http://wmi.berlios.de/docs/wmi-paper.pdf this summarizes the concepts of wmi and compares its features to ion and larswm. very interesting...

Wow, I am going to have a look at that since I remember fondly those days! It's a shame that the windows don't have the same close button as the turbo pascal/borland c++ IDEs!

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

You should also try larswm out, think it'll suit a lot of people here. I like the concept of a real window *manager*, but it's a shame I need BiDi support in the titlebars and so on. I'm also into graphics... If only there was such a window manager which is toolkit-based.

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

I tried wmi all afternoon... took a while to configure it to my liking. I haven't decided if I'll stick it, I'm thinking not. It doesn't support keeping fixed sized empty frames (at least, I can't find how to support it), so I'm continually resizing and splitting, which I rarely do with ion.

It is prettier than ion though. :-D

Some bugs though.  ion next time I startx...

Re: For those interested in minimalist window managers...

First post here (will become an Archer over the weekend) but I just have to say screen is the biz. I use it all the time when connecting to my home network from work - I've done everything from P2P downloads to kernel compiles, starting them off in the office, detaching, then picking them up again at home, or vice versa. I can't imagine running VNC again at this stage.

Yep, I'm using it and I love wmi. This new version is a great improvment over 8.

Cheers

You've got a couple duplicates in your TUR, wmi-8 and wmi-9 are both there, as are two versions of 3D-desktop... unfortunately, only the oldest seems to be picked up by packman. sad

EDIT: I've been using wmi for a few hours now and it hasn't crashed. I'm hooked, ion is gone. wink
