startx wont work anymore

I updated some pkgs (I don't think x-related) [except latest glibc?] and startx will not show up anything [even fvwm]. I ldd the Xorg executable and I think I have the libs it dynamically linked upon.
what's going on?

Re: startx wont work anymore

I commented out the glx area and it now works. What should I do to make it work *WITH* GTX {as it used to}?

Re: startx wont work anymore

Recompile the nvidia drivers.. if you are using them.  If you search for glibc on the forum, you can read about other people that have had troubles.

Re: startx wont work anymore

I upgraded glibc today. Reinstalled the nvidia drivers and it wouldn't work. Commenting the glx from xorg.conf made it work..
I tried installing nvidia again a few times and also at some point deleted ~/.nvidia-settings-rc.
I'm not sure what got it working, but it's working now (with glx).  :?

Re: startx wont work anymore

I did re-install nvidia. it worked. then I Restarted and it doesn't work. [I also don't have /dev/ppp /dev/dsp (sound) etc]
this is very interesting, I bet most of this is because of glibc?
I mean what's the point in releasing glibc and all the packages are broken? Should the devs first update the related pkgs (the system pkgs at least) and then release them *with* glibc. I have no sound eventhough I have TONS of modules loaded and related to sound (never had so many auto-loaded). I have an sb live. [alsa with oss emulation]

Thanks for your time, I hope downgrading to previous glibc will work ok.

btw, apart from the first comments about how would be the best way to go with glibc update, I must say that an echo "if you have NVIDIA/ATI(?) drivers, just re-install the module with NVIDIA/ATI installer" is necessary in glibc pkg. if not add also that NOTHING WILL WORK OK except if you also upgrade all the other packages (pacman -Syu) without rebooting. (that implies that all these packages are up2date and linked against newest glibc.)

Now, I know that in NEWSLETTER it says devs will do their best to catch up on latest glibc. I know they do. [eventhough it's summer]. I just wonder why, they don't do it firstly and then comeup with glibc.

I'm not a disattisfied [with other stuff {becasue AL should be BLEEDING EDGE} I just think that this kind of problems [glibc] could be solved without any pain [and with 5 days delay?]

Wombat installer or somerwhere in the console it should say that:
"if you want to me 100% STABLE edit your /etc/pacman.conf and make sure you have release and not the others.."
or sth like that, so people that first install AL won't get the idea (not me but OSNEWS's Eugenia and others) that current is 100% stable.
They can stay with their release and there would be no problems.

That was my EURO smile

Actually, releases are NOT 100% stable. It's just a copy of the current tree of a certain time. There is always some problems in the system (and every other system too), no matter how small they are...  roll

Re: startx wont work anymore

Zep you seem to be a bit unlucky with this one - I had the same problem, but after I reinstalled Nvidia drivers, everything was cool. Oh, there was an issue with Pacman as well for a while, but a fix was available as soon as I looked for it.

I've always been able to fix my AL problems within a day (except surround sound!! !!%$£*&!!!!), hope you get those issues sorted matey.

thanks guys for the info. but still downgrading didn't solve much. [I downgraded to the glibc version that is in AL 0.6 CD]

Re: startx wont work anymore

are you using udev? (you mknod blurb makes me think so)
if so then you should check your permissions as the file may have been updated.

The same goes for if you are using devfs.

It sounds stupid but check anyway.

Re: startx wont work anymore

Wow, look at all those modules.  I find it strange that all of those are loaded but you don't have snd-emu10k1 loaded, which (I believe) is your sound card's module.

I don't know about ppp, but my guess is that you are missing a specific module there too.

Re: startx wont work anymore

Run alsaconf to create some aliases in /etc/modprobe.conf
It worked for me, I had the same problem.

Re: startx wont work anymore

I added hotplug in my DAEMONS array
I have a lot of modules that I don't need
but I have /dev/ppp and /dev/dsp working now

I'll try hwd and I hope this will reduce the modules asked/and loaded in general.

btw. my MODULES array:

MODULES=(!usbserial !ide-scsi ppp_generic snd-emu10k1 snd-seq-oss snd-pcm-oss nvidia !ovcamchip !ov511)

and lsmod says this:
