1920x1440 on 4:3
and
1920x1200 on 16:10
theese I consider minimum. I agree with bigger is better, as scaling down can be done at the user side

Yeah, I would do one for each common ratio in the largest size that's out there and then write a script to generate scaled-down versions for different resolutions... or let people do it themselves.
PS: 1920x1600 :-)

1920x1600 would be almost 5:4
1920x1440 is proper 4:3

You're right. I must have been daydreaming while I typed that. :-)
How does 1920x1200 sound?

1920x1200 is 8:5, or better known as 16:10, which is the usual
aspect ratio on computer wide screens. tv's usually have 16:9.
*edit*
I have 1920x1200 on my laptop

I have a 1680x1050 screen myself, which is probably the most common screen size in use today, but it's best to create wallpapers at 2560x1600, or 1920x1200 minimum. This means they'll last a few years as we progressively go to larger and larger screen resolutions, and they scale down nicely to 1680x1050 proportions.
vim? EMACS? Pssh, I code in Scribus.

1920x1200, despite the fact i have a 1680x1050 native res, 1920x1200 wallpapers scale almost exactly the same as 1680s' and i can then center them for something slightly different
