arch 2007.8 installation - configure system

i cannot install archlinux 2006.6 because of this issue) so i am trying with arch 2007.08..

when i've set the mountpoints, selected packages, installed packages, i am going to configure system part and the installation shows me configuration files, which are completely empty!
what does it mean? when i want to set root password it gives me "unable run command 'passwd' no such file or directory" when i want to setup grub, i get "cannot find /mnt/boot/grub/stage1"

what should i do? i have read the wiki and it wasn't helpful in this case.. i though the installer generates those configs, or am i wrong?

Re: arch 2007.8 installation - configure system

Although that is an unofficial release, it is pretty official. tpowa is a developer and he does a very nice job with the archboot cds. Tpowa's archboot install images are looked as an alternate to the official installation media and is in no way look down upon.

You will still get support for arch and it doesn't really matter how you install arch. Many people that have issues with the official install disk will use the archboot installation. So don't worry about it, just download the image and install!

Re: arch 2007.8 installation - configure system

I'm not sure what's up with those config files. I used a newer install disk than that. I would recommend getting the newest release here:

http://www.archlinux.org/download/

The i686 net install disk is well seeded if you want to use bit torrent. I just checked and I'm downloading it (should be done in just 2 minutes and I just started).

Re: arch 2007.8 installation - configure system

Arch really doesn't have "releases" in the sense of most distros, rather it provides install discs with updated kernels and base packages every now and then. Once you run pacman -Syu you'll have the same system running regardless of how it was installed. The only difference you'll notice between the latest offical and the unoffical images is that a few menus are different and the unoffical image requires less downloading to update the system following install.

Re: arch 2007.8 installation - configure system

iBertus: i see.. so it doesn't matter which version i would install, pacman -Syu will synchronize with currtent repositories and will upgrade everything from there, right?

i just started to read the main and the most important articles on arch wiki and i must say it's written really great. thank you for your hints.

but if someone would have an idea about those configuration files, during the installation, i would appreciate it, because i would like to understand it and find out where's the problem..
also, there should be something done (from deweloper's side) about that issue i wrote in my first post..

You're not the only one, having problems with that iso.

ok, i successfully installed arcboot 2008.6 and now after reboot i get unpacking initramfs...<0>kernel panic - not syncing crc error.

i've only found some brazilian thread about it and i am pretty much confused.
