When trying to log in as root, GDM says "it is forbidden to log in as root from this screen". I don't recall setting up such a policy, and I believe I should be the one deciding what's forbidden and what's allowed on my computer
So would anyone know how to change this? I looked briefly in the GDM configuration files, but couldn't find anything related.

There's an option in the GDM setup utility that says "Allow local system administrator login" in the "Security" tab.
I think this is the option you're looking for.
I believe the option is disabled by default since some GNOME releases, before it was possibile to log in as root.
