static IP and the need to set ROUTES=(gateway)

Can someone explain to me why the ROUTES=(gateway) line in my /etc/rc.conf is required for a static IP setup to work properly.?

Technically it isn't -- the static IP should still come up OK without a default route... But you won't be able to access anything outside your local LAN segment.
