Very Odd Internet Problem

So over the past 2 weeks or so I've been trying to install various different distros on my computer after deciding I really wanted to go back to linux.

First, I tried arch, but couldn't get the internet working so I scrapped that.

Next, I tried Kubuntu 9.04, but couldn't get the internet working their either.

This morning I tried Ubuntu 9.04, and still the same problem.

I put windows back on my computer to make sure that it wasn't a hardware problem, and I indeed could access the internet there. Then, out of desperation, I installed Ubuntu 8.04 which is the last linux distro I had on my computer that worked. And guess what, it still works!

Since I obviously don't want to be stuck with older versions of Ubuntu and other distros, I want to figure out the problem. But I'm not sure what it could be.

What do Arch, (K)Ubuntu 9.04 have in common that Ubuntu 8.04 does not?

I'd really appreciate any input on the matter because I've been butting my head against a brick wall for 2 weeks, and I just want to figure it out already. Thank you!

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

What errors do you get when you can't connect?  Do you have any network, can you connect to your router for example?

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

When I attempt to ping anything I get "Unkown host" errors.  I can't connect to the router either, I think that returns a "network unreachable" error.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

Can you do a lspci for us and post the return? And how are you connecting to the router?

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

I'm not at the computer with the problem at the moment, but I can tell you that my ethernet card is...

00:14.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP51 Ethernet Controller (rev a3)

And I'm trying to connect to the router through a wired connection.  I've tried dhcpcd (arch) and dhcleint (ubuntu) and neither have worked.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

Do you know if you have the module for that card? If you have hwd installed (I think it is on the boot-cd) try running, as root:

hwd -e

locate your ethernet card in there and it should tell you what module you need. Then load it and see if it works. If you have ubuntu still installed, you might be able to do it through there.

Googling returns that there are a couple people with this problem: http://forum.vectorlinux.com/index.php?topic=9060.0

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

I have tried manually loading modules for my card in the past.

It requires foredeth, and even after loading that the problem persists in both arch and ubuntu.

Thank you for the search results.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

I doubt this is the problem based on what you're saying but I'm throwing it out ther efor giggles.  I have to disable IPV6 in every distro EXCEPT Ubuntu.  I'm assuming it isn't enabled by default in Ubuntu.

Having said that, when IPV6 is enabled, for me, it just makes for REALLY slow internet, but I do get online and on the network and all that.

If for some reason that is the problem, there is a detailed walkthrough in the wiki.  Simply search "disable IPV6".

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

If you manually loaded the driver as 'foredeth', no wonder it didn't work - it should be 'forcedeth' (unless my memory serves me wrong yet again ...)

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

Compare the output of the following commands between a working distro and a broken distro:

ifconfig
route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf

If there's no output from the first, add the -a option to it.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

Did you get ip address from router or ISP ? Did you try only from console, or from networkmanager, wicd too ?

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

I get my IP from a router.

And I tried connecting via CLI with arch, and GUI with ubuntu and kubuntu.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

No, when doing ifconfig, eth0 has no IP address attached to it.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

Hmm, well your forcedeth driver appears to start correctly. No errors at least. How are you starting the network?

Compare the output of the following commands between a working distro and a broken distro:

ifconfig
route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf

If there's no output from the first, add the -a option to it.

Re: Very Odd Internet Problem

Perhaps you need to acquire an IP address first. Try running `dhcpcd eth0` (assuming eth0 is the interface you use to connect to the Internet).
