The Arch Hurd Project

I'm currently compiling this and hope to have at least a basic system up and running in a few hours time

I've been interested in GNU/Hurd for a while but for some reason never thought to try it out. Anyway, I might see if pacman will work happily on it and, if so, package everything up (unpackaged files seem messy, somehow…) and, if people really care, stick them online somewhere for others to play with.

I'll stick to free software only on it; it seems wrong using the GNU operating system with the GNU kernel and nonfree stuff

I had a Hurd cross compiler on my system and started an "Arch Hurd" out of shear boredom... pacman works fine from (with some patching) memory and there were very little issues with other base packages.

Well... I pulled out my old Hurd cross compiler PKGBUILDs today. They need adjusting (cvs->git transition, libpthreads has been split etc), but that should not take too long.

If people are interested in getting a very minimal "Arch Hurd" up and running, I think building enough from the base group to get a booting image would be possible without too much hassle (but a lot of time...). CLFS will cover most of the steps needed. From there it is relatively easy to make packages with makepkg/pacman for a final system.

So if people wanted to start an Arch Hurd, I will update my cross compilers and make the packages/PKGBUILDs available and we can start setting up a wiki to document the progress cross compiling to a bootable system. I could see this being an interesting waste of time!

I've just spent nearly 10 hours (I did sleep for a few hours in the middle whilst things were compiling…) trying to get a bootable Hurd install, I couldn't even get Debian GNU/Hurd running…

Would there be a way to switch the Linux kernel to Hurd on a current Arch Linux installation without the need to cross compile a minimal Arch Hurd system?

No, much like you can't just switch to the BSD or even windows kernel...

Anyway, I will work on getting the cross-compilers working over the next couple of days (probably not until the weekend...) and will post them here. Then this mad experiment can start!

This could be the start of something neat...how much of Hurd actually works right now anyway? I.e. internet via say elinks or something like (I'm not expecting wireless), amd64 instructions, etc?

If Arch Hurd gets off the ground, what are the odds I can still get Opera and Flash to work?
