I was having this strange problem at a coffee shop recently. I can connect to their WPA2 network over wicd, but once I'm connected, no internet. I can ping www.google.com and get the IP, put that in chromium, but a search won't resolve the address. Strange enough, I can in fact get to the internet with IE 4 Linux.
Oh yeah, and their router has no user / pass for administration it if that helps...

I would think it sounds like your chromium configuration is broken. Did other browsers (w3m) worked?
Just Guessing

chromium has a DNS cache and does DNS pre-fetching and it sounds like something broke

interesting. Yeah I looked at the DNS pre-fetching, I think I disabled it and then still had problems. I didn't have ffox installed at the time... Oh and pacman was not working either, so when I tried to get that going, no dice.

Possibly transparent proxy interception with restrictions on allowed user-agents?
