Re: How do Archers play their music?

I'm an  Anarcho-primitivism, so I play drums, acoustic guitar and melodica.

Ok no, mpd + ncmpcpp... And looking for a good "record player".

Gmusicbrowser

Or if X is not running just MPlayer

I use the spotify client, it's ugly so I keep it in its own workspace untill I've gotten spotify premium so I can use the despotify client.

Re: How do Archers play their music?

Amarok for longer playing, smplayer for single/few songs.

Before I became sort of a KDE purist, I used mpd with sonata. Unfortunately, all qt clients for mpd suck. Maybe I will go back to sonata + mpd, overcoming my hatred for the qt-gtk theme.

Re: How do Archers play their music?

Has foobar2000 already been mentioned? Probably it is.

It is after all by far the most versatile player around. Damn shame it's not ported to linux.
With wine it's almost as good as with "that other OS"...

Just a minute ago I did a nice conversion of some wav's to aac, using neroAacEnc. Leaving me with probably the best lossy encodings one might want....:)

Re: How do Archers play their music?

Hi. This is a very interesting discussion, because I have yet to find the perfect way to play music.
On Windows, this was easy: foobar2000. It had awesome custom tag support.
But now the situation is more complicated. There are 100 players who can play music, but like nobody has support for custom tags.
To make the situation even more complicated, I use different file formats (FLAC, mp3 and Vorbis), which all have different standard tags. (So foobar2000 wouldn't work anymore, because it doesn't distinguish between different file formats).
I'm starting to question if tags are even needed, or if i should invent my own custom way to add information to media files (maybe something that even supports video files?).

Re: How do Archers play their music?

MPD is supposed to get support for MusicBrainz tags, which are pretty much the best in the book AFAIK.

I discovered the other day that you can tag mp4 videos. I'm not sure if it works for every one, but it works for youtube ones.

As for tagging, yea, it's always a pain. I have pretty much given up expecting tags on music I "borrow" to work immediately on my computer and just retag them myself (this might be a bigger problem for me than you all because I have music from many languages; English tags for the most part are alright). When I switched from foobar2000 on windows I had to retag about half my music too.

I also thought I might mention that I use mplayer for running single/few/strangeformat songs. I have a script to run it in a terminal so I can double click on songs in a file manager and it'll run them for me.

( quotes are funny acting )

Funny, has always worked flawlessly for me. Foobar tags are pretty standard aren't they? I suspect the linux players/organizers are to blame here if it doesn't work for you.
The players I tried and read my 'foobarred tags'  -----  rhythmbox, exaile, goggles.

Re: How do Archers play their music?

I use plait. I find it really nice and intuitive (and cmd line). I also maintain the arch package, so if anyone has any issues with it, please let me know. As backend I use mpd and to browse my library I use cli or occasionally ncmpcpp. I mostly use ncmpcpp for it's excellent tagging and lyrics capability, but I guess that can all be handled outside equally well. However, give plait a try if you like the command line and playlist generation; I was really positively surprised.

Re: How do Archers play their music?

Yeah, on Windows I use foobar2000. On Linux I tried out a lot of different players until I stuck with mpd and Sonata for a long while. Now I found deadbeef which is quite similar to foobar. I left mpd completely for it.

As for organization I keep everything in ~/Music/Artist Name/Album Name/01 Song Name.mp3. A good portion of that is flac as well. For tagging I strip all tags except for Artist, Album, Track Name, Track Number, and Year (Album Artist is added for albums with more than one artist). Album art is in the same directory named cover.jpg. Also all of my music is tagged in ID3v2.3 in Unicode with ID3v1.1 tags removed. I use kid3-qt (kid3 without any KDE dependencies) for all of my tagging on both operating systems. It's the best tagger I've found since it allows you to change file names according to the tags and vice versa along with MusicBrainz integration and support for custom tags and etc (so I can remove them). Yeah I'm a little bit obsessive with this, haha.

Not all of my tags were Foobar tagged, most of the songs that had problems were tagged elsewhere that just worked with Foobar. Mostly these tags were of Japanese music. I'm guessing they were in Shift-JIS or something like that and the Linux players wanted unicode.

emms (emacs multimedia system)

Edit:

Update: ditched emms for mpd, which is fantastic. I'm finally escaping the little emacs prison I set up for myself and relearning the beauty of the unix philosophy.

Re: How do Archers play their music?

mpd, ncmpc, pitchfork and mpod.

When I am home I use ncmpc.

When I am using a friends computer or another computer that isnt mine. I stream and use the webbased mpd client pitchfork.

When I am on the move I stream to mpod, a iphone mpd client.

This definitely sounds interesting. My playlist generation requirements are pretty basic -- take album X and play it from start to finish -- so plait is probably more complicated than I need.. but I'll give it a try anyhow.

Mpd + ncmpcpp. And I play cds with Amarok1.

Just noticed mpd should support sid files.. Great, I've been listening Commodore 64 music because I'm trying to find some underrated tunes.. Of course I like the classics also.

I don't have any audio file on my computer, except the ones I ripped myself from my collection for sharing with friends.
I don't use my computer for listening music, on my system the only thing which can play music is mplayer.

However, since I have many CDs, I keep track of my collection in a text file organized like this :

ARTIST | ISO COUNTRY CODE | YEAR | ALBUM

And the CDs on the shelf are organized this way too (by artists, and then by year of release for albums of the same artist).

Yes, I think you are the only one here who does that.  Also, I think you are crazy tongue  But if an audiophile tells me it sounds better that way, then who am I to argue?

Also, +1 for mpd, but if you want something simpler, then Exaile is a good choice.

mplayer is all I need for my music and movies on my regular dekstop computer and laptop. However I use XBMC on the HTPC.
