If you're interested in learning more about QT it might be a good choice, since I think the main update it needs is going from qt3 to qt4.

Beryl - it was there with me on my first steps in Linux. I still have some old screenshots with the red gem in the systray.

There are two types of people in this world - those who can count to 10 by using their fingers, and those who can count to 1023.

But compiz is still alive and kicking?

GNU Arch! That's a man's version control software!
Personally, I'd rather be back in Hobbiton.

I don't really expect you to work on it, but my favorite "dead" open source project is Window Maker, the window manager.
It doesn't bother me so much that it's old. After all, it's incredibly fast, stable, and standards compliant. It's just looking a little out of date, and it seems like it's getting harder and harder to find documentation and help on it. I suppose I could say that about all of GNUstep.
"Étoilé" seems to be a project to modernize a Window Maker-like user interface. Unfortunately, no matter how much I read about that project I still don't really understand what it is.
EDIT: I found out Window Maker is still actively developed, but hasn't had an "official" release since 2005.

Quanta Plus.
It's technically not dead (or so they say) but there has not been any sign of life for at least 1.5 years now
Oh well ... Netbeans does a good job too

You could check out the ArchCon videos for info on some Arch projects that could do with some work.

Cool. I didn't know there was anything like that in the ArchCon videos. I'll check them out in ten days when I get back to college.

IMO ZSNES is perfect the way it is.

Not really. Only runs on x86. BSNES is close to perfect ...

For some reason this project reminded me of this when I wasn't able use compiz. It was simplistic but it at least it worked and didn't have the overhead that compiz exerted on my old system.
If you're reading this; you're awesome.

I have to say offlineimap. It's not quite dead yet, but its creator stepped back from maintaining it and it has hardly received any love since then.

I always thought it was sad there hasn't been a Nethack update for very long, but I guess that's more like an undead open source program..

Oof. Didn't realize that. Maybe this'll spur me on to learn more Python...
I'll chime in for Grub 0.97. It might be dead, but it's going to take something incredibly serious to break it.

I debated posting this in Programming or Community Contributions. Seeing as this would benefit all of Linux, however, I thought this was a better place. If I have erred, feel free to correct me.
I'm a long-time user of Linux, but my contributions sum up to answering a few questions now and then on one forum or another. I would love to give back to the community. I honestly don't think I could come up with an idea for a program and code it all on my own, so I was hoping to revive an old, potentially very buggy project that's been left to rot by its devs.
Right now, I'm downloading the source to Silver Tree, an RPG completely forgotten by the devs of Wesnoth. I would like to try my hand with something that isn't a game, however. Language doesn't matter - once you know one, you can easily program in quite a handful of others.
Now it's about time to reach the point of this post. What program can you just not live without that hasn't had an update for a while?
Perhaps a better question is "What dead program would you potentially use if it were less buggy?"
Avisynth 3 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AviSynth
It's a "core" program (when talking about video encoding). I suggest to avoid trying to resume dead projects that have already a working alternative or games.
