Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

I'm attempting to install Archlinux on my HP/Compaq TC1000 but I can't boot the install cd on this hardware.

The system boots up untill it attemps to start /bin/run-init and fails with a kernel error because it can't find /bin/run-init.

How do I get around this problem? I've tried booting with the "Legacy IDE, No SATA" option.

Welcome to the forum, m_abs!

With which Image did you try to boot ? Did you try every booting facility from the CD ? Did you check the downloaded image/iso with md5sum checking ?

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

Thanks smile

I tried the netinstall iso
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso/2009.08/arc … so.torrent
and the core iso
ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/iso/2009.08/arc … so.torrent

I tried both normal start up and the "Legacy IDE, No SATA" options on both images.

Both images was burn with k3b checking the burned data.

PS. the device doesn't seem to be able to boot from USB, this was the first thing I tried.

Did you try it with earlier release too, 2009.02 ?

Can you boot again and make a picture of the contents of the screen? Or even better, can you append "vga=0x318" to the kernel commandline, then boot and make a picture (more info will be visible on screen then).

How do I get around this problem? I've tried booting with the "Legacy IDE, No SATA" option.

This option shouldn't be necessary for anyone anymore as far as I know.

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

kernelpanic
Sorry for the crappy cellphone pic.

I know what you're thinking...I'm not m_abs!
But I ran into this exact some problem trying to boot the Arch installer from a USB on my TC1000.
The image I'm using is archlinux-2009.02-core-i686.iso

A little info on the TC1000. It has a Transmeta Crusoe TM8500 995MHz CPU and Nvideo GeForce2 Go video.
I found a year and half old post of someone asking for help with Xorg on this thing. So I assume Arch CAN be installed.
Unfortunately that poster never came back tot he forums.

EDIT:
Tested the TC1000 with Slitaz off the USB. Ran ok.
Also shrank that pic for you.

Please resize and post smaller pic.
The last lines are

/bin/run-init: opening console: No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

Ok. So I got home, and downloaded the latest version of Arch (2010.05), used dd to write it to the USB drive (at work I was stuck with Windows methods).

This time its NOT frozen with a kernel panic and I have different error.

I'll just type the last few lines...if you really need a picture ask and I'll post one.

:: Mounting root (aufs) filesystem
aufs 2-standalone.tree-33-20100426
:: Mounting images
::: Binding /bootmnt to /new_root/bootmnt
ERROR: Root device mounted successfully, but /sbin/init does not exist.
Bailing out, you are on your own. Good luck.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
[ramfs /]#

The last line is actually a prompt that lets me enter commands.

Any ideas?

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

Are you 100% sure that processor is i686? Slitaz can boot "older" cpus, Arch is for i686 and above.

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

No. I'm not 100% sure. Everything I find on the web says that its fully x86 compatible. I'm not sure what that means. Here's some info on the CPU.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmeta_Crusoe
http://arstechnica.com/old/content/2000/01/crusoe.ars/2

I've come across a few posts from early 2009 that say they have Arch running. Did Arch support other cpu architectures back then?

EDIT:
The wiki says that it requires a CPU with "cmov instruction".
At the ramfs prompt I did a "cat /proc/cpuinfo" and at under flags I see cmov as a flag. I don't see anything else that tells me if its i686 or not.

Read the links I posted. Transmeta did some funny things with the instructions and it's hard to say whether their processors are "real" i686 - in a sense they are, but in another sense they're not.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 973#p45973

I couldn't find an answer, whether your cpu is real i686 or not. I think it's only some 30 minutes of googling away, but I'm too lazy / busy to do that ;P

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

We found the answers!!!
http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 78#p784978
http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=38661

Apparently the Crusoe is sorta i686! It needs a custom kernel thats in the AUR of all places (right under my nose)!
Now I need to figure out how to apply this to the installer's kernel. OR...maybe i'll take this opportunity to learn a new distro (lately I feel like I'm hooked on Arch).

Thanks a lot for your help!

EDIT:
Cross posted; so changed "I found the answers" to "WE found the answers".
Thanks again!

Re: Problem with installation on older (2003) tabletpc.

This thread was exactly a year and 2 days old when you posted. Seeing that Arch is a rolling release, and that in that year 3 different snapshots ISOs were released, it is highly unlikely that everything would have been the same for the OP and you DePingus. Posting in the same thread makes for a lot of disjointed information because what was relevant a year ago might not be anymore.

Please start new threads for issues that you have and reference older/similar threads to let others know what you have tried out, especially when you know that you are not m_abs. wink
