I personally prefer irssi. I tried weechat for a day recently and ultimately went right back to irssi (not a knock on weechat, I just like irssi better).

Irssi with screen here. Weechat never felt very comfortable.

I like both, but i prefer weechat because it's easy to configure and has a nice channel list.
Weechat: Works out-of-the-box. Reasonably nice.
Irssi: Excuse for me to learn perl.
I use weechat because it allows me to replace bitlbee with jabber.py
